Title: Upgrading a 1991 gs500E with newer version carburetors.
Post by: tREX on January 26, 2020, 03:12:33 PM
Hi!

Does anyone here know if the newer carburators will fit the older gs500e type? Did anyone try? (I didnt find anything with the search)

I did this and I even ran the 01-02 airbox with paper filter. The carbs take 2 (throttle) cables and I think if run with 1 its fine you just need a longer cable if I recall. You have a bit easier time if you run it with K&N instead of airbox, but its still doable.
However my bike developed a problem, I incorrectly traced it to the carbs, I still have a little bit less of a problem but the petcock may be the issue but I have swapped to 89-00 carbs on my 95 now. So yes its fine and it works.

Cool.
Srinath.

The 89-00 have 2 cables to the carbs - cables, not fuel lines or hoses etc. Choke and throttle opening.
01 and later (I ran 01-02 carbs on a 95) have 3, choke, throttle opening and closing. The opening cable is all you use and you need to get one with a longer inner made if I recall. I fabbed up something that was longer on the inner and outer.
Maybe a 04 cable set would work if you got the carbs with the cables.
I actually am trying to think, if I fitted the twin cable system onto mine along with the grip and whatever else. Too many bike parts running all together. Likely it was the bolt which I poked around with around that same time.
Cool.

I will see if i can get the whole cable set. Otherwise it shouldn't be to difficult to adapt it seems.
Thanks for the info!

As Buddha mentioned, if you use both throttle cables then you will need to also get the newer throttle tube for the right handlebar that has the location to install the 2nd throttle cable.
