Title: Gas leak & won't start
Post by: Bville-Bud on March 05, 2020, 04:17:50 PM
Guys please help me out!  I have two things going on.  Some background.  The 2005 GS500F is new to me (bought a week ago with 3000 miles on the clock).  I rode it to work today and all's well.  Came home and took off the rear fairing and then the right side fairing to run some wire for accessories and the large vent hose with some sort of valve peed A LOT of gas as soon as the side fairing came off, perhaps a quart or more.  It is still dripping fast now.  Some googling here shows maybe a float valve?  More concerning is that she will not start now.  She will crank, but not try to fire up.

I am sure this is a self inflected wound, but I am at a loss.  Any ideas?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!!

Is the fuel coming from the airbox drain hose?

What is the frame petcock set to?

Check the engine oil to see if it's too full and smells of gas.

Thanks!  I'll check tomorrow morning.  I pushed her outside of the garage so she can finish peeing my gas and won't burn down the house, and it's dark now.

By the way, I keep getting this wrong.  How many petcocks does a new GS have??!!

You are very welcome

I wish I knew the answers to those verification questions... it's been years since I've had to do them (and I hear that some of them don't make sense). They are a pain but they DO go away after you post a handful of times (I think it's 5 or so)... so hang in there!!

The drain is coming from the air box.  the oil smells a little like gas, but everything wreaks of gas right now!  Ha ha ha

I'm going to take the carbs off and clean them.  Looking for a FAQ or something now....

Make sure to drain the oil and put in fresh too... it sounds like it got contaminated with fuel. It happened to me a few years ago  :technical:

Here's a great guide for the carbs:

Did you get a look at what setting the petcock is set to?
