First of all, Hi! I'm dave I'm new here and I've got an idea for a project cooking away in my head and way too much spare time to think it out.
My girl is looking into getting a GS so she can get off my rearseat, especially since I no longer have one (race only now). I saw the thread when I ran my search that says the sharkskinz, and I'm sure others panels for a 916 would fit with minimal fussing but what about getting a headlight into it? Possible, anyone ever tried to do this or have any input as to how I might start with making brakets?
Also, to attach the body work someone mentioned something about welding something to the frame, is there an easier way to do that?
In order to make brackets, first go buy some aluminum stock at the hardware store.
If you remove the bolts that hold the brake hose guide on one side and the speedometer cable guide on the other (bolts are on fork brace -between forks, above fender and under triple tree) then you can make brackets for the lower part of the front fairing. Just drill through the aluminum stock and the plastic faring and fit a bolt with a nut and washers to secure it. On mine, I used two aluminum pieces with a cross piece for greater strength. I then drilled two holes in the fiberglass in order to fit the fairing to the aluminum brackets.
As for the top of the fairing, if you put on clip-ons, then you free up the holes where the handlebars mount. This will give you four mounting options the upper brackets in order to secure the fairing.
Here is a crappy picture of the upper brackets.
