Title: Soot under diaphragm
Post by: kml.krk on March 14, 2020, 08:29:14 AM
When I was cleaning the carbs yesterday I noticed that the whole compartment under the diaphragm was filled with soot. Only one of the carbs had this issue. The other one was squeaky clean.
The bike ran fine the last time I was using it regularly, 6 years ago, and ran well after I cleaned the carbs yesterday.
Any idea what might have caused the soot and why only in one carburetor?
I didn't take a picture of the sooty one but have a picture of the clean one to show what compartment I am talking about. Pic is here https://photos.app.goo.gl/SZXBa2jGxGT73Lso7
I'd appreciate any advice or ideas you may have

Hmm. Hard to tell what exactly caused  soot in that one over the other. But sitting six years and manning being ran with a dirty air filter prior to storage could be the culprit. What's the air filter look like? Clean? Did you disassembled/reassembled these in the past or is the first time you have opened up this bank of carbs?

I opened up carbs before to rejet. Twice actually. Filter is K&N, no arbox and it was cleaned not long before I stopped riding. The soot must have been deposited there in the past. I don't think it affected performance cause bike used to run well. I am just curious why it would collect in one carb and not the other. Strange

This does seem strange! Looks like the carb on the kickstand side had the soot since it is the opposite of the one in the photo you linked?

Yup. That's correct. The kickstand side had the soot.
The bike was sitting for 6 years in a heated garage, on a center stand though.
