Title: GS500 1997 Won't Start
Post by: Davieyjones on April 02, 2020, 04:34:35 PM
Have a 1997 GS500 that have converted to a cafe racer. After assembling the project the bike will turn over but wont start.

Things I've checked so far:
- cleaned out carbs
- battery good and turns engine over no problems
- wiring seems good, both plugs are sparking and haven't messed with any of the timing.
- bike has good compression

Other than the modifications to the frame the bike is completely stock just cannot work out why it wont start. Had a look at all the other posts about not starting but nothing seems to fit.

Please help.
Thanks in advance.

If the fuel getting to the carbs and then to the engine ?
You open the tank petcock and route the hoses right ?
You using choke ? Maybe try without.
Cool.

didnt have luck on starting my bike either after winter stand, just poured some gas thru plug holes and after few tries it was rockin, just remember to put petcock on up position for free flow during this

If you aren't careful, this will get your motor hydrolocked and may bend a rod.
I can see spraying gas with a squirt bottle into the intake could be OK or even starting fluid, but liquid gasoline in the chamber - hell no. You have to put in very little - say 250/14.7 (stoich ratio right) cc - about 18-20 cc. I'd still be very leery.

yeah theres a risk, once my cars valve cover 'exploded'. but still it works more times than it fails, and guaranteed engine fire, for awhile atleast

Are you sure the battery is new?
