Hi All,
Having just successfully completed a top end rebuild , I've now noticed that I've got a leak around the seams of my tank. Not a major leak but fuel is gradually dripping down onto the frame causing the paint to dissolve.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did they fix it? Or am I better just trying to find another tank?
Also, really struggling with the security question of 'How many petcock does a modern GS have', what is the answer?
Cheers,
GW

everythings repairable ;p sand it down and put some epoxy and its good to go.
and one petcock?
You should really try to find the leak, which means rubbing the paint down to bare steel.
Depending on the size of the holes you should be able to braze over them or braze on little copper patches.
If the holes are too numerous, you'd have to put in a chemical tank liner (Hate this!)
Worst case scenario if rust is too bad around the seam, find another tank.
There are two (2?) petcock on a gs500. One under the tank and one on the frame.

If the tank has a bunch of pinholes its leaking at - you're gonna have to find another tank. If its just 1 hole or a single spot in a seam - you can fix it. You would first clean off all the rust - with muriatic acid especially if it is a seam. Then clamp the seam shut.
Then see if someone can weld 1/2" extra on both sides of that spot. Now you'd need to coat the tank with Kreem or POR 15 or some other product.
I've don't several of these jobs going back to the 90's, in fact I'd cut open the tank and hammer dents out if it had any as well. What you need is a good tig welder (person and equipment).
Cool.
Buddha.
