Title: Fork Swap Front End Front Wheel List etc etc
Post by: cbrfxr67 on April 22, 2020, 10:25:13 AM
On my Ninja project I ended up finding the aluminum front rim had a flat spot in it.  Went to try and straighten it out (works on steel wheels) and messed it up even worse.  So chucked it and ordered another used one.

Was doing front tire on gs and noticed how stupid heavy it is compared to the Ninja rim.  I mean it is significant.  Started a front swap idea deep in my brain and I got to looking around.

37mm fork swap would be an easy way to get a lighter wheel on it.  Started looking for 37mm etc and found a chart.  Maybe this has been covered but I wanted to save it for next gsnerd like me who's digging for info.  I should have just asked buddha who'd've given me the full list in memorized continuity off the top of his head,.. :icon_razz:

Good to know, thanks for putting that together.

We all have to find new garage projects to keep amused with these days!

Any idea if most of those forks with be compatible with the stock triple tree?

There's a long list there.  Any models that you'd put on your favorites list?

Oy vey ... I'd not given nothing but this link -

https://www.kiwavmotors.com/en/faq/about-fitment/motorcycle-fork-tube-size-chart

BTW you lost me @ - Honda CR-125R "Elsinore" (79)

I aint going near nothing that's called elsinore.

Now you cant be sure these wheels aren't heavy a$$ pigs either - but generally a 3 spoke mag will need to be heavier than a 4 spoke and that needs to be heavier than a 5 spoke etc etc.

I'd say a wheel swap is not an easy job, you may be better off swapping the whole FE, in which case, good luck fitting most of these CR FE's, they're usually miles longer than the GS.

I'd guess your best lighter wheel and still easy enough swap is gonna be from a Suzuki, maybe a 96 and later katana 600 or a SV etc.
Which BTW is a free swap with a 96+ Katana FE. I just don't like em as much as the 88-95 kats cos their brakes aren't DOP. Dual opposed piston.

Cool.

Dude 1/2 the crap in that list have wheels that would put a GS motor to shame by weight - not to mention some of em are 21" spoked wheels like on the intruder 1400.  ???
This is a good way to eat up a few days in quarantine at a local junkyard if you were so inclined to take a few day break from drinking. But an XS1100 wheel will be something I will not fit - On an XS1100. A GS wheel on XS - mmmmm that sounds gooreat.

There's more to a wheel swap, or a FE swap than just fork dia. If you were hell bent on a set of forks to slide into GS triples wheel, calipers disks etc etc all in 1 piece - take a Vernier caliper and measure the inside spread of the GS forks. Print that list down, write the number you got measuring it and take to junkyard. Same model as on the list - measure the spread - if equal, then you can get the whole FE and swap it in. I'd honestly think its useless to swap a older fork for the GS fork, but hey - I'm just a random guy on the internet. What do I know.

Other than maybe the CBR-600F "Hurricane" (87-90), this seems like a list of bikes that should be swapping for the GS500 forks. Like, GS seems the nicest on the list.

I wonder if the CBR-600F has the same fork spacing as the GS.

Yea I know right.
I actually lived on this list trying to fit forks onto my savage. I got maxim forks to fit, but they were like 10mm narrower and I gave up trying to fit calipers etc etc - doable but was a PITA.
I'm actually now looking for a GS forkset for deraking and modding that savage but to no avail. Ofcourse I got some lying about somewhere - just where is the question.
Cool.
