Title: RGV front end...
Post by: Sean on March 07, 2004, 01:10:51 PM
Wanna fit a RGV250 front end? With gold USD forks, twin discs and 4 pot calipers?

Just a walk in the park!  ;)  Same head bearings, same front wheel...   almost a straight swap!  :P

Check it out here...  http://www.gs500e.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=12738#post12738

Just at the start at the moment, but watch out for the finished thing, very soon.

Didn't know that. They're reasonably easy to find in breakers yards over here.

The forks are about 1" shorter than the GS's which gives it a great, nose down, almost aggressive stance.  8)

Fingers crossed it'll all get bolted together for real this weekend. Then I should be able to get some better pics and more info.  :thumb:

I dont mean to be a nit picker, but damn!! get them rotors drilled or something.  :P
I had a 94' yzf750 front end on my SRX600 race bike, it looked sweet too. :thumb:

The rotors we were given are the wrong ones...   too big. They're the same size as the GS's, 310mm. The RGV uses 300mm discs. We'll get 'em changed at the weekend when we go get my front end. Some of the RGV's had grooved discs, though most had drilled so we could be lucky.
Drilled or grooved, whats the difference? Still looks great having two discs up front.  8)

I was just messin with ya a little. The UN-drilled rotors look a little early eighties to me, especially next to those sweet USD forks.  :thumb:

The RGV gained USD forks in 1991, so any year after that will fit.  :thumb:

Since the USD forks are about 1" shorter than the standard forks, it drops the front end a little, while at the same time kicking up the rear some more.  :thumb:

No, the tubes are 41/45mm and the spacing to different.

You will need the clamps, clipons, axle, and spacers. You can use a GSXR wheel, fender, calipers, and rotors though.

I had a set of USD RGV forks shipped over from the UK a few years ago. But it didn't have the top clamp. I tried for a while to find another that would fit, but the offset and spacing is different than all the GSXR ones I tried.  Finally got tired of trying and ebayed them off.  They were pretty though...

how much are these usually sold for? all the clamps, wheels, brakes and everything you would need.

Title: Second one coming along...
Post by: Sean on March 14, 2004, 02:09:59 PM
Well, the second one is coming along nicely now. Picked up my RGV front end yesterday, which we installed last night. Lev had his parts back and we spent today fitting the parts to his bike...

Both bikes are shaping up nicely now. Should be good to see 'em when they're both completed and compare the differences in how we've executed the mod. We've taken slightly different paths...   obviously Lev's is the newer shaped GS, whereas mine's the older model. Where I'm using the RGV clip-on bars for a lower, more racey riding position, Lev has chosen the more typical streetfighter approach and will be fitting higher drag bars. We've also taken different routes on the clocks front too.

For all the info, see here...  http://www.gs500e.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1274&perpage=15&pagenumber=1

Should be progressing nicely by next weekend, fingers crossed. More bits to add, clean up and respray...    Gotta get a move on, Spring is just round the corner!  8)

Well, they're nearly finished at last.  8)

A little bit of tidying is all thats needed on both bikes. And I'm just waiting on my braided brake lines to turn up. The whole USD fork/twin disc front end thing has had it's headaches though generally speaking been reasonably smooth. Or to put it another way...   it could've been a lot worse. Still, we're there now, in time for the spring/summer (should it ever arrive!) to enjoy our GS's after all the work thats been put in on them.
It's been worth the effort & expense to end up with a coupla GS's that look just that little unique.  :thumb:

Time to start planning the next mod now!  :P
