Title: Missing relay?
Post by: Monkeeman on July 29, 2020, 02:02:06 AM
Hi all, I just bought a GS500E 1996 model with 20,000kms, cool little rig.  So now the fun starts, it wasn't running, no battery fuel etc.  So I put a battery in it but no lights come up on the dash , no horn, no indicators etc and no starter action!

Looks like I'm missing a relay / fuse or something.  Can I enquire from the brains trust what should go here?

Thanks in advance.

Fuse is missing. I think its a 20 amp - but look in the manual.
Cool.

Thanks, 3/4 ports are wired, the 4th is free, looks like I'm going to purchase a manual!

I don't suppose you have a pic of what the fuse is, main, starter, replay, solenoid type etc?

Thanks again

I think you are missing more than just the fuse. You are missing this entire starter relay assembly:

Do you have that thick wire going to your battery? The green part with the fuse clips to the red part shown in your first photo. As seen here:

Update, I received the relay and you wouldn't believe it, it still wasn't cranking!  I could hear the relay clicking and it was getting power to the starter motor side.  So I opened up the starter motor cover to see what was going on, ha ha, next problem!  Further investigation showed I'm missing the starter motor, rotor, signal assembly, ECU and stator!!  I have all teh parts now but still no spark.  I think its because I went from the older 2 signal sender to the newer single sender with the funky rotor.  3 wires coming to ECU rather than 4, the hunt continues!

Too true.  Ok so I got the right signal generator (twin pickups), hooked it up aaaand, still no spark.  Bypassed the clutch (should only be an issue if in gear) and side stand, still no spark.

Cracked open the headlight and there's some dodgy wiring from a replacement ignition switch (non genuine) as it might have been hot wired....  Apparently there should be a resister in the genuine switch.  I borrowed an ignition from a DR650 from a mate that should work but noooot quite.  If I flick the switch above the starter button on/off I get a few sparks from both cylinders, then nothing.

I'm wondering if its sensitive to the wire thickness/connectors I used to extend the DR650 wires to fit the green 4 plug or I should just get an original used ignition switch, thoughts

On a positive note it builds and holds oil pressure!  ;)
