Title: coil packs
Post by: jiggersplat on March 07, 2004, 03:48:37 PM
hey all,

my bike appears to be only firing on cylinder at the moment.  is it possible that i switched the right and left coils while i was re-assembling?  i can get it to idle (sorta).  if the coils were switched would it run at all?

Yes, that is how you can test your coils.

The right and left coils are interchangeable.  If one of your coils is bad then after switching the coils the bike should still run on only one cylinder - it'll just be the OTHER one.

But if that's how it turns out then you know the problem is in the coil rather than elsewhere.  If the same cylinder still isn't firing, it's "electrical check" time!

no no... what i meant was, could i have the left coil hooked up to the right cylinder.  i guess i didn't make that clear.  i'm pretty sure the coils are both fine since the cylinder that isn't firing DOES have spark.  i think i must have messed up the carb somehow when i rejetted for a k&n filter.  i might try some fresh gas too... the stuff that's in there has been sitting in the tank for 5 months.

Gotcha - sorry.  I'm not sure, but I don't think the spark plug wires will quite stretch across to the other side.  You can follow one of the wires with your hand, or position your head behind the front wheel and see what's going on.

Would the bike still run?  Hmmm, one of the racers could probably answer that one.  I keep hearing that each plug fires twice during each 4-stroke cycle, so if the timing is just right...?

Left coil to right cyl, right coil to left cyl... = wont run = disaster???
The coils fire every 360 degrees... hence they fire into the exhaust gasses as they are leaving the cyl = nothing. The other cyl is in the bottom of the intake stroke and firing there will cause it to explode... Basically every tim e the cyl is just before TDC there is a spark... while left is just before tdc the right is just bfore BDC. Bad to spark there.
Cool.
Srinath.

i don't think they the spark plug wires will run across to the other side either, but i had the whole bike apart, and had taken the wiring harness off.  i was wondering if i could have switched the coils.  it doesn't sound like it would run at all though, so i'll have to start looking elsewhere.
