Title: $100 '92 GS500 project begins
Post by: Beyondbrewing on September 15, 2020, 01:49:33 AM
So I saw a GS500 on Craigslist for $100 and couldn't resist. I have a collection of Dual purpose and dirt bikes. Both running and projects. The guy told me that he ran it without oil and seized the bearings. For that price I didn't care. Upon getting it home and doing a quick inspection I realized it was full of oil and popped of the side cover. The magnets had come unglued from the magneto rotor and jammed everything up. Cleaned it up and low and behold the Pistons moved smoothly. The PO had already removed the top end and somewhere along the way a ring got broken. I already sourced a cheap magneto but I was hoping someone would have an old ring laying around so I can at least start it before I invest in a rebuild. It was the middle ring. I am already brimming with ideas after parousing this site. Will post links to pics and start detailed post as soon as I nail down a project concept. Thanks in advance for your help.

So you install a used ring, assemble the engine and get it running. Do you then disassemble the engine and install new rings and re-assemble?

I just want to see it turn over before I invest. Then I will pull the entire engine and mount it on my bench. If I put new rings on I will definitely be replacing bearings, seals, etc. Probably do a complete rebuild.

Any progress on this?
