Title: New Member -2007 GS500F - for my GF to learn to ride - thoughts?
Post by: rule62 on October 23, 2020, 10:47:08 AM
Hello,

I recently bought this 2007 for my GF to learn to ride. It's got less than 3000 miles on it. Previous owner had it lowered for his wife, and then she lost interest. So far, I've installed progressive fork springs (.80 for her weight) and new 15w fork oil. Also a set of R&G sliders, and a pair of adjustable levers (she's got small hands). Changed oil, plugs, filter, set chain slack, etc...  Carbs were rebuilt/serviced just before I bought it (have receipt and warranty info for the work done).

So far, it seems like a fun little bike. I take the fairings off when I go with her to practice. She fell once already (slow parking lot stuff) and knocked the right side front blinker off, so I replaced them with flush mount style. And while I was at it, I cut the rear fender down. She originally thought a 250 would be better to learn on, but I believe she'd outgrow it too soon. This 500 seems tame enough to learn on, but strong enough not to lose interest in.

Next up is valves. Seems to be a little bit of noise coming from left exhaust at about 1500 - 2000 rpm (then goes away). No problems with start, idle, or running... just wanna make sure they're in spec. After doing them on my previous Ducatis (2v and 4v) and Aprillia (4v), the GS motor appears to be a fairly easy prospect. (I like to tinker).

Any other "must do" suggestions?

Thanks for the add. I look forward to learning and contributing to the group.

Seems as your off to a good start!  I'm new to the bike and have found a lot of good info in the wiki and searching the forum archives.

Welcome to the forum! Awesome post and the flush mounts look good.

I bought my '98 GS almost 9 years ago and taught myself to ride... I'm a chick who is absolutely still in love with the bike.

Can't think of anything else you should do... sounds like you've checked off the most common stuff already
