Title: Tachometer drive and sleeve & engine covers. Cross-year compatibility?
Post by: cristiean on February 25, 2021, 11:56:07 PM
Hi, I'm new around here. The GS is my first ever bike. This forum has been immensely useful so far so thank you for everyone who is taking the time to share their wisdom :thumb:.

Recently my tachometer cable was completely stuck in the tacho sleeve. In trying to find a new one, I found this one on eBay that claims to replace the part I found in my '02's parts fiche. My question is, would it fit well? I have already ordered it, but I wanted to do a sanity-check here before cranking the bike with the new tacho drive and messing something up. The old tacho drive is ok (a bit of rust on the exterior side, hence my thought of replacing it with the new one). If the new drive is not compatible, I will just replace the sleeve and o-ring it comes with (hoping the new sleeve fits the old drive).

The second thing is I want to replace my engine covers. The previous owner removed the original coating and polished them, which looked good when I purchased the bike but now they've oxidised and look horrible. While I know I could keep polishing them, I don't want to do that. I found these covers on eBay  that claim to be for '04-'08 models. However, when I looked up the fiches for my '02 and compared them to the '04-'08 models, the engine covers part codes are the same (1134101D10, 1135101D10 and 1136101D10). Again, I want to sanity-check my thinking here and ask if they would fit. Also, is there something I should be particularly careful of when replacing them (apart from replacing gaskets, which I will do)? I also saw the starter coil on the inside of the magento cover- is that easily removable to then insert it in the new cover?

Many thanks. I hope I didn't break any forum etiquette.

What year is your engine ? The tach in 04-09 was electronic with the signal coming out of the advancer side of the motor and into the wiring harness wasn't it. Someone correct me.
Then those cases are $$$ like cost 3X the bike is worth. People paint them all the time. Or polish or otherwise "creativity" them.
Just do some like that. Replacing it all is a lot of $$$$ and work. And likely a lot of scope for ending up with leaks where there weren't before.

Cool.

AFAIK, all years which a mechanical taco drive were the same.
All years engine covers are the same (except the sump/base of the engine) other than color. You can put the older black covers on a newer silver engine, etc.

UPDATE: The tachometer sleeve fitted. The tacho drive didn't. The engine covers also fitted. I've changed the metallic emblems to the black ones. Cases look mint now and I'm so happy.
