After not riding the bike for over a year, I started it again yesterday. I noticed smoke coming from the breather hose which I don't remember seeing before. Plugging the hose with my thumb, I can feel pressure building up. Anyone know what's going on and why there is smoke all of a sudden?
Update: After running the engine at idle for about 10 min today, the smoke has disappeared completely.
Has me thinking that with some backfiring when first starting the engine, excess oil got forced upwards into the valve cover and was escaping as vapor and it looked like smoke. I still find it weird. Never seen it on this bike, or any other bike before.
More like blow by when cold and seals up when hot.

Thanks. That is a good explanation. I was very worried there for a bit. The engine has only done 26,600km (16,600 miles) - so relatively low mileage.
Yea, and a bic ball point pen is put together with better tolerances than a GS motor.
My 89 was sucking down a quart in 3000 by 8k. It still ran to 48K when I sold it where it was using a quart of 60 wt in 300 miles.
Blow by, oil spewing out the exhaust etc etc all common. Just keep an eye on oil level and it will all be fine.

Not that unusual for an engine that has been sitting. Once the engine warms up, the condensation/ water vapor burns off, the rings and cylinder walls get worked and it seals up.
What I was thinking, if the oil was a bit older it might have condensatin that has collected that burns off as steamy oil when first starting.

It all makes sense now. Thanks for the explanations, guys. I started the bike again today and the smoke is gone. :woohoo:

I've been modifying the bike and also had back surgery last year. But it's nearly time to ride it again. Just waiting for the seat upholsterer. :thumb:

Now your breather hose should have a filter on it if you've got rid of the airbox. Some people put a car PCV valve on it. That's OK too.

Thanks. Yes, pity about the Panther, but I didn't know how valuable it was back then. I'm still kicking myself about the Triumph, though.

I'm planning to get a filter; just don't know where to get one locally. The Suzuki agents will probably have to import it at astronomical cost if I go to them.

If a PCV valve off a car isn't your preferred option then, tie a sock around it maybe 3 layers thick. Its just to prevent water and mosquitoes and bumblebees from getting in there.

I still have the factory wad of folded screen in the cam cover. I felt better having a filter on the outside.
IDK what is availible in South Africa, but eBay is flush with this style breather. This might also be what the Buddha is writing about.

Internal stayed ( which may be an oil separator), plus the added the external breather filter
Those K&N's are what I was talking about, but wrap a sock around it 3 times and spray it with K&N oil and call it a day.
