Title: For top bolts with preload availability
Post by: jackinacabin on June 08, 2021, 08:57:19 AM
Hi... Having a bit of an albatross trying to get a fork top... The one with the preload for an 89 gs. The seal has gone. Has anyone got one or a used rhs fork. Also wondering if the later forks are the same diameter and if the top nuts..bolts will fit either leg.. Grr old seized fork bolt.. Thanks in triplicate.

Yeah, if you want the pre-load adjuster fork top you will have to order from another market that had pre-load adjusting tops. I think Europe got the. US never had those. All years should fit ('89 - '09 or whenever the GS stopped being sold in whatever country you are shopping).

On this page of my project thread (scroll down to the bottom), I have links to where I bought OEM fork preload adjuster caps and the seals that go with them:

I hope that helps!

Thanks for the replies . I have found the cheapy way to do this is to buy some old forks with caps on them and i hope between the three that I will then have i can make a good one . Iy will mean that one side has preload and the other does not .. even then it will be a huge improvement . If however i can retrofit the remaining reload adjuster top for a standard none preload then all will be equal ... Its a 30 something year old commuter bike , it does not have to be pin sharp after all ....  best ishes  and thanks ... Show biz wolf ... I found the caps from suzuki at about 130 pounds a pop which is ludicrous . The old forks i have bought were 35quid and  should provide enough bits to mix and match ... thanks again

In the end a none adjustable top fitted with three pound coins and a number 17 socket making a spacer to emulate full preload. Seems to work fine.. Complete mare to get the top bolt off though. It was very seized...

To take that top off I've never managed it too clean, but you're supposed to have it in a vice with it gripping as low as possible with something soft and sticky in the jaws, like a chunk of car tire.
I've also seen people use impact wrenches with decent success, but I didn't have one of those.
Cool.
