Title: Replacing ignition
Post by: Aussienoob on August 07, 2021, 10:22:05 PM
Hey guys, just signed up, I've got an '06 Suzuki GS500, it's my first motorbike so a bit of learning to be done. Someone unfortunately knocked it off and the cops managed to recover it (bloody miracle), but the ignition barrel had been removed, so I've had a go at replacing the whole unit. I've gotten to what I imagine is the last part, and I can't work out how to undo these last two screws. It's a bit hard to tell whether I'm looking at the top or the bottom of the screw, as they're tiny and my eyes aren't the best, but I think I'm looking at the tiny top of the screw and they both seem to be a bit rounded so I can't get any purchase on them. Any tips on their removal? Hopefully the picture makes sense.

Edit: Should clarify, it's the 2 on the bottom which attach the lock to the black plate.

You'll have to drill them out. Use a high-speed steel (HSS) drill bit and put a drop of oil on first. Only drill the head of the bolt away and not all the way through. IIRC, I used a 5mm drill bit. Go slowly and put more oil on if needed.

When I got my GS500, the previous owner had lost the key so I also had to drill it to get the ignition lock off.

Ah bugger. Thought that might be the case. How do I extract the rest of the screw after I drill through the head? Thanks by the way

It will come out easily. Grab it with pliers or Vice-grip if necessary.

It will come out by hand actually, its just tightened with those breakaway bolts till the heads breakaway. Once the tension is released by drilling out the head, the thing will come out by hand if you did it right.
Cool.
