Title: Camshaft timig
Post by: Grimm on January 02, 2022, 08:52:22 AM
Hello guys. I have a 2003 Gs500. I had noise from camshaft but i fixed it. So i think set the engine timing wrong. My bike drinks too much gas now and top speed is 180 km/h now. (Before it was 190-195). I downloaded the service manual and it says right cylinder will be on TDC but i searched some forum sites and people says left cylinder will be on TDC. Please help me..

Hi, can you give us more info? Which cam noise did you fix?  The "cam knock" / "walk" noise? How did you fix it?
Do you expect cam timing to be out? I.e. out a tooth on the cam chain, or do you think ignition timing is out (timing is not adjustable on our bikes without modification.)

I'd suspect a strong tailwind and a very full tuck to get 195 km/hi 😉

180kmh is about 112mph!

If your bike can reach that speed I very much doubt the issue is connected to the valve timing  :D

Agreed! My GS500 has never been able to reach that speed.

Bollux, if you stretch out your legs behind you, and bend your head sideways onto the tank whilst blowing very hard behind you into a time warp then it's a doddle, no probs, 112mph - sorted... 'cept, maybe the speedo isn't that accurate? p'raps? I've seen 112mph on mine, but I sure as efF didn't believe it... we can but dream...  :D :angeldevil:

112 indicated would be a true 101 mph since most GS500s read about 10% off. I think I've seen 105 indicated a few times on a slight downhill stretch. Not sure I've ever actually crossed the ton in true mph.
