Title: Tachometer backlight out
Post by: richard on March 10, 2004, 09:20:46 AM
Hey all,

my tachometer backlight has gone out... I don't think it's burned out, though, because it occasionally turns back on.  At first. it would turn on for awhile, off for awhile, now it just occasionally turns on for a few seconds and then goes away.

Anyone know of a quick place to check if it's just an intermittent wire?

The other end of that wire is in that 2 pin connector that is part of the bundle of wirtes that come in the dash... but that will include the speedo ligt too and if that's not doing the same thing... then the problem could be that the bulb is loose in the holder more than the wire itself.
Cool.

Title: how do I get to it?

How do I get to that bulb to check?

I haven't had time to sit down and really look at it, but do I need to open the tach, etc?  if so, how is that done?

Had the same prob- the filment inside the bulb was loose... so occasionally it would touch and light up and other occasion not touch and go out.  Short answer-Replace the bulb.  I would check the bulb before digging into other wires and leads (start simple).
Title: bet that's it

I bet that's it, the filament problem.  It started when someone *really* cut me off and I had to slam on my brakes.  That was a couple thousand miles ago (almost two months) and I was still getting better at the braking thing, so I killed the bike stoping and skidded a bit.  the intermittency dates from then...  don't see how that could have caused wire problems, but a filament makes sense.

Thanks for the link... I'll have to try that, see if I can get to the bulb.

Does anyone know what was done to adapt those LEDs to work back in there?  I'm toying with the idea of multiple colors (complementing, preferably =]) behind hte spedo and the tach, as long as I'm replacing them anyway.

You don't need to adapt anything to get the LED's to fit.

Just buy 194 bulb size LED"s and it's a straight swap.

You can get them in many colors at superbrightleds.com.

Do all of the LEDs on that site fit that size?  I didn't see any sizing information.

Cool.  So anyone know the size for the lights in turn signals?  I bet the white LEDs are a whole lot brighter than the normal incandescents... with less power.
