I have had so many issues with Fedex recently. They are nothing compared to their glory days of being the premium/high speed shipper.
Yup, they drove the truck over it. Standard operating practice if it doesn't break when they toss it down the stairs.
BTW that should have been packed in a rigid box. Not a bubble wrap baggie.

The good folks over at cmsnl will fight it out with FedEx and will send me a new one for free. Phew!
That isn't a hard part to find in the US. You should look for the hiflofiltro brand. IMHO same flow, much better outer wall. Lends itself to a openable and element replaceable type filter over the stock ones mesh outer wall.

The good folks over at CMSNL sent me a new air filter.
I have one of those super super rare one-of-a-kind gs500s, the , wait for it, the 2003 model.
Previously when I got the bike, it had a stupid k&n type air filter and some rejetting. I had a horrible flat spot around 6,000 RPM at full throttle.
Rejetted the bike back to standard and put a hiflofiltro filter in. It was much better, but not perfect, still a little flat spot if full throttling under load.
Eventually after FedEx delivered the second OEM filter, I put it in and went for a ride. Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah.
No more flat spot, did I say hallelujah already?. Maybe it's in my mind, but the bike seems more responsive to opening and closing the throttle. It's a joy to ride now.
Note that 2001 and 2002 and the super rare 2003's😉, use the filter with the 1-in tube inside. This has made all the difference for me.
I'll post some pictures of the old and new filters, the factory filter medium seems much better to me.
Still trying to wrap my head around exactly what has happened. I know that the bike was stumbling with a flat spot due to it being too rich, but why having the 1-in tube inside the filter will make it leaner at wide open throttle and run perfectly now is beyond me.
More vacuum due to the greater restriction should raise the diaphragm, maybe that leads to lower air flow and hence this fuel sucked in.
But in all honesty who the F cares now it's running great hallelujah!
