Title: Won't Start - Flooding?
Post by: Ned on December 24, 2022, 12:17:28 AM
G'day all!

I have been stop starting a project to get an 04 running. It's taken a long time between family, work, and a house move. I got to a very exciting time today, just had to put it together and turn it on to tune to carbs/idle.

She started (you beaut) but immediately reved to 8000rpm. Thought it was a hiccup so I turned it off and on again two more times for the same result (shocker).

A bit more reading and I screwed the idle adjuster right out, and turned the needles under the float bowl from 3 turns out to 2.5 turns out. I then drained the float bowls and what seems like too much fuel came out. She wouldn't start after that no matter what I did with the idle adjuster or those needles.

Now, the starter clicks the engine doesn't want to turn, and the float bowls keep filing up with what what seems like to much fuel. Does this just seems like a float hight issue? (Yay gotta tear it all apart again)

Burying the lead. The last time i turned it on before it was flooding, I heard a metal click under the valve cover. I'm hoping this isn't something nefarious.

Unfortunately, I won't have any more time to work on it unti the 31st (thanks work).

Cheers!

How do you know the float bowls are filling up with too much fuel? Are you measuring fuel heigh with a clear tube? Where is the fuel height relative to the float bowl gasket?

Did you have the choke on when you started the bike? You may have had everything correct. Normal startup behavior is choke on and the bike will rev to 7,000 rpm. You let it sit there for a minute or so and then start lowering the revs by turning the choke off a little at a time. After 5 - 10 minutes the bike should idle around 1200 rpm with no choke.
