Title: Top Speed
Post by: 2ride4life7 on March 11, 2004, 05:39:04 AM
Just wondering what kind of top speed your bikes go. Mine usually gets up to 90 then trickles to 100, depending on weather it may go abit faster. is this normal for the gs. If not what can i do to make it perform better.

Cheers

Top speed is for crotch rockets.  The GS is about sweet handling and acceleration in the twisties rather than straight line.  To get the best out of it, do the following (others may prefer a different order but the mods are on most people's lists.)- Progressive fork springs and 15wt fork oil; good tyres (or tires if you prefer); better rear shock (check the site for various recommendations); braided brake lines; 15T front sprocket (loses a bit of top end but accelerates like a startled cat); filter/jetting/pipe (best done all together if you can afford it); fairing/windscreen.  Most of the rest (eg rear-sets, clip-ons, race seats, bodywork, etc) don't really make that much difference on the road but do look cool.  Hope this helps.  :thumb:

I've had similar experience on the GS also.  Gets up to 85-95mph allright but then will trickle up anywhere from 95-105mph.

ASLAM.

I've had similar experience, but I have also gotten the feeling that I could go a good bit faster if I really wanted to push it and work the gears.

Even unmodified, I've known people to report speeds of up to 120mph on the gs.... just probably not uphill or into the wind.

too bad that 120 mph on the speedo is more like 105 actual speed (radar)

Im one of those who has had my relativley stock GS into obsurd (sp?) sppeds that seem unholy, and undoable for the little bastard. I have been known to hit a corrected 210+ km/h on my GS. As fast as 240 behind a car in the draft. But thats in the draft. The 210 n the other hand is on a 4km strait stretch of road thta leads to my hous just on the west edge of Calgary. So I guess it *somehow* depends on the bike, and where you are even perhaps. Who really knows?

How Fast do you want to go??  The answer to that is:

How much money do you want to spend?  This is what I have spent and there is a serious difference in performance (all price include shipping)

2001 Gs500:             $2125 (Ebay)
Mikuni Jets:               $35 (Dealer)
K&n Pod Filter:          $32 (Web)
Bob's Advancer:        $10 (gstwin.com)
Full V&H Exhaust:      $130 (used)
JT Sprocket:              $15  (Dealer)
98 Katana Shock:      $50  (Katanaplanet.com)
Progressive Springs:  $65  (Web)
Pirelli Front Tire:        $30 (Ebay)
Avon Rear:                $95 (Ebay)
Misc Parts/ Labor       $100

TOTAL:                    $2687

My goal was to get a decent bike for less than $3000- off course, I've had to be patient and thrifty. The bike handles great- easy to maintain, cheap insurance, and it gets to 100mph with room to spare.  I still maintain 40 miles per gallon and I have learned a ton of mechanics.  And I've learned how to ride.  When I got a little bored I put a little more money into upgrading- but I think I 've about hit the limit.

The GS is a great bike- just not the fastest.  But I won't complain for $2700.

Ask the officer who pulled me over today................ :x .
Wrote me up for 90 in a 65 zone.
On highway 280 in the Bay Area that is the flow of traffic.  Bastard!  I rode all the way home doing 70 watching all the cars FLY by me.  At least I'm eligible for traffic school.   Best part was is the same cop was writing someone else a ticket at my exit and he waved to me, smug ass.  I gues I can't be that pissed, I was doing 115 right before I passed him.

That's why I opted for a GS. It keeps me out of trouble......well, that and I'm poor

Redlining up through the gears, an indicated 120mph which is undoubtedly overstated can be done if you have enough road for it. Seeing as this is 50mph over our speed limit I would not dream of doing it, er, honest officer. Well you just HAVE to do it once don't you? UK bike mags say 118mph max, I'm not sure if that is "real" or indicated.

I've had my '01 up to 110 mph indicated. I think that comes out to 75 mph corrected

Actually, my buddy on his ZRX had the same indicated speed.

At any rate my bike doesn't have any problem going past 80 to 100
indicated.

Pretending for a moment that your comment is serious, "slow" is a relative thing.  Compared with light an R1 is "slow"; compared with a stationary guide post even a GS is fast enough to do a lot of damage.  My point is that absolute straight-line speed is a pretty poor indicator of how much fun a bike is.  And isn't that the point of the whole exercise?

its still fun to know that our stock bike that some have payed less than $1500 can outperform many high performance street going cars retailing for +$40.000

I dunno, man. I was riding around the other day with my friend who has his Honda S2000, and I was struggling to keep up on my GS. Granted both are completely stock.....maybe I was just being a naughty place and not giving it enough throttle.

If I ride east at the equator, including the rotation of the earth I can get my bike up to 1,120 mph.

Wondering about top speed the last sat. night I finally got the nerve to let it go. Lonely stretch of highway around 12am pretty straight shot. Got to 110 and crouched down some more came up on 115 got down as much as possible to slip stream behind my tiny p.o.s windshield and hit 117-118 kept at that for a min or so then gave up.

I've had my GS redlined or maybe even a little beyond it (you know, when it starts to make all the bad noises) in 6th gear on a racetrack.  I once calculated top speed at redline in 6th gear to be 129-130mph.  Mods were full fairing, full Hindle exhaust and Factory jet kit, good for 43hp.

Well I tried this with my wife on the back yesterday.  I was only able to get it up about about 96mph in 6th gear.  I think I could have gone faster if I dropped it into 5th and redlined it.

ASLAM.

I did 90 today in 4th gear. Hit it as hard as i could and the GS actually has real good git-up and go.....well compared to most cars that is. hehe
