Sorry if this is not strictly about my GS500 but I had a question on battery performance and discharge.I replaced my bike's battery with a new Platinum AGM battery but that was faulty, didn't hold charge and left me stranded. The shop replaced it with a new one but I am a bit concerned that this one might not be working correctly too - or it might be that my expectations are incorrect. The battery was charged up when I got it home as it was showing less than 12.6 volts(as per the instructions that came with it) and on Tuesday night was showing 13.3 volts. I have not put it into the bike yet but today it had 12.89 volts on my multimeter. Is this normal behaviour for AGM batteries? The charger used was a smart charger, if that makes any difference. Thank you for any advice and sorry for any ignorance in my question!
A fully charged (flooded lead acid) battery is 12.6 volts. The chemistry will not alow it to go higher,. if you read higher check your multimeter.
Note that you can not measure the battery just after charging as it has excess "surface charge" (which can be higher than 12.6 but only for a short while) Connect a bulb to it and run it for 2 minutes and them measure. Or measure the next day.
Sealed/ Gel type batteries can be around 12.8 so sounds like you are OK.
Thank you, Herennow, that is very reassuring to read. I did do the reading on Tuesday night just after disconnecting the smart charger so that would explain the higher reading at that time. I will install the battery now!
