I've just recently bought a 2006 GS500F, for some background I used to be a used car technician and I now study Mechanical Engineering. This is the first motorcycle I've ever bought/worked on and I can't seem to find anything pertaining to my situation. When I first bought the bike it had fuel sitting in it for a very long time and I bought a carb rebuild kit which switched out the Jets and needle valve, after this the bike idled great. I could even rev it up to 3000rpm with no issues but after that is where my issue lies, once the rpm exceeds 3000, the rpm starts to gradually rise and it does not stop, every time I've tried to fix this issue I've had to hit the kill switch to stop it from rising rpm's. I've tried loosing and tightening the nuts for the throttle cable on the handle bars even though the throttle didn't seem to be sticking prior anyways and that didn't seem to do anything either. My next attempt for a fix is to replace both throttle cables but before I did I wanted to see if anyone else had had this problem or has an opinion on what else might be causing my problem, maybe on the engine side of the throttle cables. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

I think your idle is set too high. You probably set it to start nicely which is waaay to much. The idle adjust screw is just a throttle stop, so your minim throttle is too high.
The bike should require choke to start and to run for the first few minutes, and idle at 4,000 or 5,000 with the choke on. If your bike can start from cold with no choke, your idle is too high or your idle jet is too large. Once started with full choke, slowly drop the amount of choke over the first few minutes. Once it's fully warmed up (like 10 minutes of riding) set the idle to 1,200 rpm.
Thank you for all the help, it was in fact way too rich and it turned out I did not have engine warmed up enough when I initially was setting the idle screw causing "idle hang". The response and link we're both very helpful
