Title: Just got my first GS500, now to kit it out for trips
Post by: on-tour on September 16, 2023, 09:13:33 PM
Hello!

Hi guys,

So I've been looking for a tour/adventure style bike, came across the GS500 and this great forum and tracked one down through a local mechanic. Very excited for this coming into summer.
Now I'm wondering what additions to make to the bike to get it worthy of some weekend/camping trips. Have got a Hallmark (old ventura) double zip bag on the way for the back.
I'm not sure what the pannier frame was used for.. any suggestions for a useful pannier or soft bags that could work with this setup? Any other general recommendations or tips in getting started with this bike would be appreciated! Had had some experience, mostly with dirt bikes and a little with cruiser bikes in the past, so lots to learn

Thanks in advance!

Here is a set of old panniers I found online from a GSX750F.. Thoughts on whether these would be a good fit? Maybe soft bags would be more convenient and cheaper.

And the 2 bags that zip together for the back, already purchased, pre-loved condition

Hi there and welcome!

I've been using my GS500 for tours and camping for the past few years. It's been great!

I built some similar racks to use on my GS. I use soft bags strapped down to them. I prefer soft bags as I can use dufffels I already have on hand. I also like how they conform to the stuff I put in there.

It looks like your bike is already pretty well kitted out for what you're looking to do.

Looks like someone custom made those side racks for something very specific. Maybe ammo cans?

My GS has full locking hard bags from Hepco & Becker. Makes the bike great for commuting and long tours. I've done big interstate camping trips 2-up with the wife. The fairing on the F model makes it a great "mini" touring bike. Its a classification that the motorcycle industry has never paid any attention to, except maybe the silverwing in the 80s and the Suzuki burgman 650. You rarely see factory storage options on mid size bikes.
