Title: H4 Halogen Headlight 90/55 Watts Hi/Low Beams
Post by: WDHewson on May 28, 2024, 03:55:54 PM
Hi Guys,

Another question about my 2008 GS500F.......

Local store had these high wattage H4 halogen headlight on sale for 1$ CDN or about 70 cents US. So I'm not out much coin if I don't use it.

I like the potential increased visibility with a scorcher Hi beam to get the attention of those sleepy cagers about to pull in front of me and test my braking skills.

The usual H4 is 60/55 Watts.  So 2 questions.  Will my charging system handle the additional 30 Watts?  And will the extra 30 Watts of heat melt the nearby plastic bits like the lens, reflector, and fairing?

Thanks guys.......

With a glass lens it could do it, but with plastic no if you run the high beam long periods.
And the added consumption will drain your battery slightly more on high beam but you should be running with hi beam.

Remember that headlight is fixed on on most bikes so not turning off will make cranking way harder for the battery.but same wattage at lo beam.not worse

Its the same. Until you put hi beam. Even the wires could be warm and maybe melt. Is almost twice the wattage.at your own risk.
Yo could test the wiring lighting it up outside the lens.
Other option is to add a relay with direct wire fused from battery.

I would do it in a glass lens without worrying for the lens, but test with caution.
For plastic lens i imagine that on route speeds ,while in motion air cools the lens enough, stationaty will probably deform or prematurely age.

Thanks Armandorf, there are a lot of concerns, as you've kindly detailed.

But "POOF"... I powered up the bulb with my charger which has an ammeter to see if the 90/55 Watts advertised were ballpark correct.   And the quartz bulb immediately filled with smoke!!!!!

So it's not going into the bike.

Odd thing is, despite the smoke stain on the interior of the bulb, the filaments have not burned up and both still light.

I've had H4 bulbs in bikes for 30+ years and never see this.

Any guesses on what's happening?

Thanks guys.............

if it is still working , is sealed.
maybe it was some cool "brighter and cooler blueish upgraded light" ?
that would be my thought, some coating in the filament that time has "eroded".
