Title: 2001 gs500 running issues
Post by: VFRTOM on September 25, 2024, 08:46:17 AM
Hello everyone

Currently have a 2001 gs500 and need help getting it running

Problems-
Will not idle.

Only runs on choke or turn choke off and use throttle to keep it running, idle screw does nothing even when fully warmed up for 30 minutes

So far done-
Cleaned carb 4 times and replaced all the o rings top and bottom + new diaprams in the top and its fully clean!!

Air/fuel 2.5 turns out

Using a temp gravity tank/bottle so only 1 fuel line to the carb as the orignal is soaking atm to get the rust removed

Desperate for help!!! been trying to get her running properly for 3 weeks now and still wont idle

Any help is really appreciated guys!!! :D

have you cleaned jets? at least the pilot jet.

Choke enrichens the mix so it could mean the jet is clogged and you are compensating with choke.

air/fuel at 3.5 turns out could help but you may be over compensating a clogged jet

have you cleaned jets? at least the pilot jet and the bowl. be careful opening it, twist it a bit to unstick, if you pull out it could rip the gasket.

The fact it does run with the choke is a good inicator of a lean mixture. If you are confidant the carbs are clean, especially the idle jets, then start looking for vacuum leaks. Check the vacuum hose for the petcock and the carb manifold rubbers including the o-ring. Pop the airbox on if you haven't already as that adds a restiction to the air flow and might help...

Hope that helps.

Also, How is the idle RPM adjusted (the little knob that sticks out the bottom of the carb). If its too low it will just die when you release the throttle.

Have you read through Josh's thesis on carbs? Can be quite helpful. (even though he gave up and went to fuel injection 🤣

No point touching carbs until you have verified your exhaust valve clearance, which will cause low to no idle when cold.
