Title: 1999 gs500e troubleshooting issues
Post by: Abkruger on September 29, 2024, 06:43:48 PM
I bought a 1999 gs 500 a week ago and at the time it was burning oil and had oil coming out of exhaust. It would stall at stop signs. On the day I was gonna fix it, it would barely run and would stall all the time. I thought it was the valve seals. I replaced those and put it back together.

Now it will try to start and turn, it sounds good but wont. If I turn on the choke and hold the starter with the throttle it might run for 10 seconds with throttle on. Thats the most ive got.

I've cleaned the carb, checked hoses. The gas tank is rusty but has a filter and fresh gas now. Still the same issue as before but lasted a little longer running before dying.

What would be a good next step? Petcock issues, carburetor issues? Or something else. Im at a lost what to try next.

If tank is rusted a filter could not be enough, at least for first starts use a bottle or other temporary tank.
being that said,
Spark, compression and fuel.
Check sapark plugs.
Did you clean pilot mixture screw passages? You could add a turn out

Spark is good. I cleaned the tank the best I could. What do you mean by pilot mixture screw? I will try to attach a separate bottle today but it does run for 10 secs which makes me think the gas is workingish

Yes but maybe carb is clogged again. Pilot mixture screw circuit of the carb. Cames with a bronze cap.can adjust.

Do you mean the main carb jet? I can unscrew it a turn and see. Im thinking now of messing with the petcock and trying a new one. Im still at a lost.

If the fuelis getting into the bowls dont mess with petcock yet.
Pilot mixture screw, is capped from the factory.search it. you need to clean the carbs more thorougly.
also clean the smaller jet
