Title: Key won't go into lock position
Post by: zen_zen on October 20, 2024, 11:16:56 PM
Hey guys,
Just bought a 2005 GS500, the key stops halfway between off and lock. I have tried slightly moving the handle bars while I jiggle the key. I have also sprayed some WD-40 onto the lock.
Goes back to off and out off the lock no problem but I would like to be able to lock the steering.

Any help is much appreciated.

not sure what you mean by this. "Goes back to off and out off the lock no problem " ?

Note that the handlebar has to be almost fully left for it to lock.

Sounds like theft damage to the part of the frame where the steering lock engages. Tough to find a good picture, here's the closest I found: https://themotorbikeforum.co.uk/topic/28768-attempted-theft-steering-lock-broken/

Take close look at back of ignition switch as you try to engage the lock.
On one of mine, I removed the top bridge and drilled, filed the hole in the frame to get engagement sorted.

the key lock has a square shaped latch thah goes on a hole in the stem, is a box welded to the stem. check the alignmente, and maybe is broken from the theft attempt
