Title: Can the muffler crash into the axle nut?
Post by: Rallyfan on February 11, 2026, 08:15:57 PM
Hi everyone,

Jardine muffler on 2006 USDM 500F.

I wonder if I'm missing some kind of spacer.

As things are right now, the muffler is physically above and in the same plane as the axle nut.

I am worried about them crashing together when the rear suspension is loaded full bottom.

Does anyone's muffler "hover" above the axle nut?

EDIT: If so, can someone recommend a shorty muffler? I measured the OD of my exhaust where the muffler slips on, and it's 50.5mm so I'm guessing I'd need a 51mm muffler inlet?

The rear suspension has 120mm of travel. With the bike on the centrestand the suspension is fully extended so if the muffler is more than 120mm above the axle it should be fine. You could try to loosen the muffler mounts and see if it will rotate a bit further out if needed.

Hope that helps.

Thank you. I will measure and if I find potential interference I will have to devise some kind of spacer or something to "kick out" the muffler if needed.
