This is a rough that I did last night of what could be a solo cover for the newer style seats. I had some extra foam, so I figured that I'd shape it up and see what I came up with. If it's liked, I'll grab some glass at the end of the week and start on the process of making the form.

I think it looks great. I d be up for one... if I still have the GS by the time you have some to sell.
I'll take one to if you get into making them just e-mail me the info I have been looking for one of these.
Prices..? Colors...? I'd be up for one if they are in a good range! I'd like to see one that is silver like the tail section, and somehow blend in the flat black to it.
Probably about $40 unpainted. I don't have a paint connection to do a pro job, so any paint requests will need to be worked out. I do have a vinyl plotter at my disposal, so I'm looking at some pieces to match the flat black on my 02, as well as some two piece number plate stickers a la 916.
Very cool, :thumb: I have thought many hours about making one myself. In my vision I always pictured loosing the grab rail and continuing the hump until it meets the rear plastic. Just food for thought
Or maybe round it a bit more like this might be cool.

If this turns out, a second more complicated one will get rid of the grabber.

I had the foam rounded at the middle point in shaping it (thinking about that pic), but it looked very odd on the bike. I think it was because the tail was not designed around a cover like the bandit's was, as well as the butt of the seat being really square.
I also want this to be easily removed and thrown into a bag if needed, so keeping the profile following the line of the seat just seemed to work better.
If you get it to turn out and can make more I will take one off your hands for $40. Just e-mail me when you're set to go.
Could you make one mock-up for the 89-00. I love that look.
I'll have to hit one of the Central Jersey or Philly riders who own a MK1 GS to help me out with that. I wouldn't want the many who ride an older style to not have one as well ;)
Think about how it attaches. that was a problem for me: making it fixed to the seat so you can still remove the seat/cover together.
Also consider what johNLA said, as I was also thinking of this. It makes sense...solo seat with a passenger grab bar? hmmm.
design suggestion:
Also think about lifting the front edge a bit so that the top is more horizontal. That would carry the line of the tank to the back, integrating the bike as a whole better. That seems to be the style of most solo seats. that's what I would have done, or was planning on doing, if you look at those pics Kerry posted you can see how this would start to look.
Glad you picked up the ball and started running with it. Would have been much more expensive if I had done it since I dont personally DO 'glas.
Agreed on the fundamental purpose of the solo cover. For initial ease of everything I'm still going to make the first round for the folks, like myself, who would prefer it to be a true "convertible".
If this one does fly, I will work one up to delete the grabber.
Bbanjo how are you getting that seat cover to stay on does it fit under the seat also?? I really think it looks cool. :) Keep up the good work god knows I sure as heck couldn't do it.
It will wrap under the seat to secure it. That's one of the reasons that I'm hesitating making the rise in the front too much higher. If you slide back in the seat too far at speed you create a gap under anything on the back part of the seat (I know this first hand as I had the soft cooler that I use for my lunch depart the bike at 85 MPH one day :thumb: ).
I want to keep the profile down on the cover in order to minimize this effect. I think that I can make it a little taller in front and more narrow down in back without too much trouble.
Let's put it this way. It ain't gonna be a 'busa bump.
Bbanjo sounds like you are on the right track and I think rounding it on the back end just a little might help with the aerodynamics of it. Funny you should mention the Busa bump I saw a tail cover for one those this weekend and just had to laugh, what the heck is that for the six pack busa holder or what.
Why not mount an elastic strap to the seat cover? Have the cover wrap around like planned, but at the umm, foremost point, have that extra strap looping under the seat to keep it from taking off :) Of course, you'd need to take the seat off for mounting, and you might end up with a rivet or something like that on the surface.
bbanjo where in Phila exactly are you from? My house is about 40 minutes from King of Prussia and have an '89. Currently I'm at school in State College tho so I won't be around home until May.
A friend of mine does a lot of fiberglass stereo work and we were tossin the idea around of makin one similar to Wildhair's solo seat. I know neither him nor I would be interested in mass-producing tho.
while I would prefer one that eliminates the grab rail, I'd deffinatly be down for one even if you only make the first one there. count me in.
I like the idea of a more rounded one. That is sweet though bbanjo.

I'm actually from SC and there on a fairly regular basis. If I don't get a willing participant from these parts before I get up there, and you have the bike there, I'll PM you. Thanks.

Cool Anti.
I actually shaped version 2 today that is a bit more pronounced (a solid inch and a half off of the seat, and tapers to the rear). The toughest thing that I've run into is getting a "rounder" top to look right with the curve off of the side of the seat. The newer shape should be more to everyone's liking.
Bbanjo can you put some pics up of the new shape if possible?
grab rail?! I thought it was a spoiler! ;)
Bbanjo what happened to the sole seat cover that you were rounding?? :dunno: Did it turn out or not?? :dunno: Hope it works well I wouldn't know were to start on this, and you sure have more skills then me, good luck!!
