Werase643 - Ken Lehmann crashed at VIR and broke his collar bone. He was taken to the Hospital and I haven't talked to him since he left for the race and I went to turn 3 to take pics... but he lost conciousness as per one of the people that went to see him... and even he was not allowed to see him at the hospital. They were taking him from the ER and going to scan him and possibly keep him overnight. They have a cork screw copy at VIR and he crashed comming down hill... The bike is very much intact... minimal crash damage ... hopefully that means he hasn't got worse injuries.

This is the kind of news that no one ever wants to hear. I hope that the injuries are not too serious and that Ken recovers quickly! Glad to hear the bike held up pretty well - must have been those heavy duty case guards, no?

I had a nun in grade school who used to say that your guardian angel leaves you when you go skydiving. Let's hope Ken's was doing its job. A couple of Hail Mary's are headed his way.

Broken coollar bones suck and are very painfull. I have never broken a rib but I can imagine that it is even worse. Heal soon, buddy.

i hate to hear anybody has gotton hurt that doesn't deserve it. but thanks to GOD its mostly broken bones as long as he is in the hospital he will be fine with the lung.blessings and comfort to him and his family.as far as the bike, i think it will be painfull to ride and summer is almost here lets hope he gets his strength back soon.
Guys really lets form a get well package. It means a lot. I'm a PT and happen to work the ICU at my hospital. Trust me those things mean a lot. So lets get it together and do it ok..??? Imagine it happened to you.
Maybe one of the Gurus here can act as the liaison. Let me know what i can do or get and where to send it.

I emailed his wife back to get a mailing address. The hospital is 2 hours from his house, so I'm sure she won't get back to me until tonight. If anyone has ideas on what to get him, let's hear them.

I was in turn 3 trying to get a pic... I didn't hear the announcer and he crashed in tun 11 almost directly behind me and on the other side of the hill... didn't even know till I saw the field go by after re start and didn't see him. And yes to care package and I can deliver... considering I am the nearest possibly to his house.

OK We could actually solve a couple of peoples problems here... Werase used to race with his street tank on his race bike... Of course that tank is now about perfect for a race tank... big dent in it... So his street bike needs a tank... Now Octane has a good dark blue tank - anyway wont match his street bike... its black, however the old street tank was purple... so I guess its the same in that aspect .... we make a care package, buy octane's tank and add it to werse's care package... sorta like a bike care package...

btw-I had a friend crash a while back on a bicycle ride with me and he also broke his collar bone, ribs and collapsed a lung. He was out of the hospital in less than a week and was good as new in no time. I'm sure Ken will be back on the road sooner than even he thinks. it'll be okay.

Tom Doherty (LWT Nv #100) got collected by another rider and crashed hard in Turn 6 and was killed instantly...

Wow it sounds like whatever was spent on riding gear was worth it, to say the least. Heal soon, man. I guess the bright side at this point is you were racing, and there were emt's on the scene. If you have to go down, that's a damn honorable way to do it IMHO.

Spoke with his wife yesterday. They've moved him from ICU down to trauma, wich is a good sign. He has a broken clavical, a few broken ribs and a badly bruised lung. They've got a tube in his lung right now along with an epidural for the pain. He also has a fever, wich has the doctors concerned that he could have an infection or pnemonia. He's concious and ate dinner yesterday. He's very concerned with details on his crash, as again, he smacked his head pretty hard and doesn't remember anything. It seems that VIR doesn't like Ken very much.... :(
Holy cr*p! I have met Tom Doherty and Rick Young. They are both from the area around here. I've ridden with them before. What an awful week-end. I wish Rick and Ken heal soon, and my prayers go to Tom and his family.
The weather was sunny but it was cold and when it was not windy it was very nice... but when the wind was on... it was ridiculously cold.... might have contributed to the crashes... sudden coolong off of tires.

Just talked to Ken. He's in good spirits. Hopefully he'll be going home at the end of the week, but his lung is still bleeding and they're watching it closely. He's bored out of his skull, but doing ok overall.

update on Ken's condition
First-Ken and I just want to say thank you to everyone who has called, emailed and visited him and thanks to all who packed his gear and made sure it arrived home safely. Update-Ken still has the epidural (for pain), the chest tube and a low-grade fever. He has also been receiving breathing treatments 4x a day along with large quantities of IV pain killers. We are waiting to hear from the doctor concerning his lung and if all goes according to plan, he might be home as early as the end of the week. I will let everyone know if things change. Yes the bike does look more like it hit a hay bale than anything hard... Which probably is the case. That's why I was hoping he wasn't hurt too bad when I first saw the bike. Anyway... i was thinking I'd go there this weekend for dropping off the crae package... but I guess most of the mail etc you guys have sent wont make it before then... So I will go next weekend... How's that... also gives more time to buy the right things for the package. Any ideas on what and where to get it. I dont mind doing the legwork... but my poodunk town doesn't have too many hip places to get stuff though.

Any more things like these are going to be great... cos they cost nothing - very little and will give ken the effect that will bolster him mentally and physically... so We could actually give him a cash gift which might help out a lot more while it might be a little crude... however things like the tape etc will make it more of a package... Wow, that was quick. They told me 2 days, I wasn't figuring they counted the day I sent it!! I did send it early though, so I must have caught them before the a.m. pickup. Cool. Open up the box Srinath, the tank is wrapped in styrofoam and bubble wrap, but there's an envelope in there for Ken with a pile of magazines, and the check from everyone who paypal'd money is paperclipped to the envelope for you. I also threw an Octane Racing t-shirt in there for him. It's in a plastic bag to try and keep it from stinking like gas, please take it out and put it whereever you see fit. Thanks!
