After 3 years of owning my 96 GS 500, and having read how "cold blooded" they are, and hard to start when cold, I just found out that my choke cable has been broken since I got it. What is funny is that for all this time I have had the bike I have been carefully starting with the choke lever in "full choke", and in the 5 minute process of getting the bike to run I have been carefully teasing the lever down...ha ha ha.
Now that I hve replaced the choke cable the bike starts "instantly" and the process of getting it rideable takes about 45 seconds as opposed to 5 minutes. Sooo much nicer.
Have to love the simple fixes.
My choke cable is fine but the bike still takes at least 10 minutes...
:x
ASLAM.
im ready in 2, 3 on a cold day <20 :nana: :nana: :nana:
Well I live in Kansas, where yesterday we have flurries and cold in the morning. Today it will be mid 60s.
I can get my cold blooded started fairly quick, and running after 5 mins I usually take off...doesn't mean I can put a full load....
I have to feather the clutch, pop pop revvvvv....once I am off, one stop sign with maybe a little chug chug, and off to the races!
Did I mention 02 with 2100 on the clock.
wierd thing is, with mine, when it's cold, if i come to a sudden stop, it dies. every time. starts right back up every time. if i come up to a stop sign and come to a quick stop, it just dies. any ideas?
and yes, i'm pulling the clutch in!

Valve shims
John: First how the heck are you?
Second - I need an explaination on that one. Valve shims?
Paul
Thanks Paul, I am doing better than expected. :thumb:
I am guessing the valve shims are out of spec because when mine got bad it would do the same conking out during quick stops. Of course it could be something simpler, like a clogged pilot.
Great! Can't wait to ride with you again.
Hmmm, well I will always listen to reason. And, experience seems to be one of the best answers to questions.
Next to Srinath, and others here with those outstanding information sites.
