got a question here, i am buying a '97 yzf 600 in need of minor repair.
Trans shifts up fine, gears work fine but difficulty shifting down. sound like bent shift fork/s? other than that, it rides great :dunno:

If it were bent shift forks, it would be hard to shift in both directions.

Which gears is it hard to down shift in?  1st to 2nd or all?  The one area the YZF is weak in is the gearbox.  They have a tendency to chew up the 2nd gear's shaft dogs.

If it is exibiting signs of a bad transmission, unless you are getting this bike for next to nothing, I would walk away.  To fix it, the engine will have to be completely disassembled. That will cost a minimum of $1000 at the shop.

I had a similiar problem with my Laverda.  Wouldn't shift down into 1st without some major heaving.
Turned out it was a worn out return spring - $16 spring and the whole thing was fine...

Good luck...

Well if you are an MMI grad (and paid attention in class) then you should know what needs to be done.  :P

I personally wouldn't touch a bike that old with the problems it has. More headache than its worth to me.  Maybe if it were for sub $500 I might be tempted as an investment, assuming that just the trans was the only thing wrong with it.  But old bikes can become money pits...

Fix it yourself...
Open it up and take a look - you may be surprised to find something is obvious to the eye.  You're an MMI grad - fix it!

What kinda deal are you getting on this thing?

i did pay attention in class :dunno: , but, im just goin by what im feeling. like i said, it shifted up fine thru the gears and pulled fine, but i also did a search at bikebandit for parts cost jeez :x dude wants 1500 for it. i think ill will pass and instead, put the money into frankenbike :) could be something simple, but if i bought it, tore into it, and it was major,... i still bought it and would have no choice :dunno:
