Title: Replacing bulb in Speedometer without force?
Post by: marcvbuuren on March 18, 2004, 10:39:55 AM
Hi all,

I'm fairly new to the board (since 1 month i bought a GS500 and since then i'm monitoring your posts) and since last monday i managed to finally get my drivers license! (believe me, where i live this is quite a achievement!)

My speedometer light is not working anymore and i tried to replace it but i can't seem to figure out how to open up the speedometer without using extreme force (e.g. breaking the glass).
Can anyone tell me what the proper way is to get to the bulb and to replace it?

By the way, i have a white gs500, is this then from 1989?

Thanks
Marc.

Here's a thread with instructions (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7239)

The hardest part is taking off the tripometer reset knob.  get a long skinny phillips head screwdriver and stick it in the end.  Hold the knob while turning counter-clockwise to unscrew and remove, then be careful not to lose the screw!

The tachometer is very similar.
Title: In kerry's

In Kerry's absence you are nicely stepping up and doing what he would... or is it a Utah thing... or does that GS do this to both of you... Anyway its great ... someone has to be the voice of reason around here...
Cool.

Well, actually... I figure I owe so much to Kerry for A. giving me the bike for a price I could afford, B. throwing in the katana shock for good measure, C. helping me fix things even when he really *doesn't* have time, etc...  the least I can do is after I start getting to the point that I know how to help with a few things make the load easier for 'im, eh?

=]

Incidently, for anyone interested, Kerry made it to the SLC airport safely this morning.. .dropped him off myself, drove my car instead of the bike (Despite the new tire I installed last night on the bike) just so I could do so. ;-)

I'm sure we'll hear from him as soon as he gets to India... he's too addicted to the forum to stay away =]

Thanks Richard,

Getting this knob off wasn't to hard.
When i have the actual speedometer i have 2 screws on the bottom but these only loosen up the inside thingies of the device (apologies for my english)

How do i open up this part so i can get to the bulb?
Is the glass part a screwed on lid or something?

Thanks
Marc.
Title: 2 wires and a rubber gromit
Post by: richard on March 19, 2004, 06:58:44 AM
The glass doesn't come off (at least, you don't need it to)

On the bottom of the speedometer, you have the two nuts that hold it in place, and the place where the cable screws it.  Besides those, there are two wires going in.  Gently pull on those wires, and the bulb will pop out... it's just held in place by a rubber grommit thinger.... so you get it out the bottom of the speedometer.

I'd take a picture to show you, but my digital camera is broken :-(

Let me know if that helps

OK, so I'm 3 1/2 days late checking in.  (And I'm hijacking a thread to boot!)  I haven't really wanted to log in at the office, since I'm in the glass, guest "fishbowl" room and I gotta set a good example, right?  (Plus, my screen is visible from the hallway....   )

I finally bit the bullet at the hotel and signed up for 24 hours of wireless Internet service at about 3 AM this morning...for something like (cough) $14.  It kills me to spend half again as much for one day of access (albeit fast access) than I do for a month of dial-up and 100MB of webspace.  Oh well, I'm getting reimbursed.

You guys have sure been busy - 3 pages of posts is almost too many to try to catch up on.  And Richard ... I don't remember passing any baton.  Did you swipe it while I wasn't looking?  (Just kidding - you're doing great!   :thumb:  Now if you can just get a working camera you'll be unstoppable.  Muahahahaha...!  :o )

OK what have you been doing... Also watch a cricket match... wednesday India is playing Pakisthan in the 5th one day game... the series tied at 2  piece so far. It was incredible... Tell some guys that you want to see one... and they'll explain to you as the game goes on. Of course work comes to a stand still when this happens so its normal.
Cool.

Sleeping at weird hours, mostly.

All I know is that India squeaked out the last game, and that Pakistan won the previous one while I was traveling.  When the hotel employee serving the "complimentary breakfast" this morning asked me if I had seen the last game I had to confess that I didn't know anything about cricket.  He's the one who said that it looked like India was going to lose, but then so and so did such and such ... and so forth.

And now that this thread is SO off-topic, I promise that I'll start a new thread (or continue the Travel Tips for India? thread) once I get caught up!

well squeaked through... not really... we won in 10% less... like we got to the target in 45 overs instead of the alloted 50... not even close. The very first game was a total cliff hanger... with Pak losing by 4 runs. We made 349 and they got to 345 in 50 overs. We lost game to by 12 runs, game 3 by 2+ overs and won game 4 by 5 overs. The funny thing was in the first 15 overs we smashed the crap off the ball... usually that happens in the last 10... upside down approach and worked fine for that game.
Cool.
