Title: My exhaust is leaking a dark liquid when reved, whats wrong?
Post by: ACE on March 18, 2004, 07:19:04 PM
Well here's the story, I bought the bike from a guy who has had it in his garage for over a year just sitting. It starts up great every time, but when I give it a rev, some like dark chocolate thin liquid drips out of a tiny leak on the bottom of the cansiter. My step-dad just told me to run the piss out of it once I get it on the road with tags. whats the problem? any guesses?

that little hole in the bottom of the exhaust is to drain condensation that collects in the can.  Could be a mix of water of and rust.. Although if it's black it may be deposits.  My old two stroke dripped black goo all the time.

How long has the bike been sitting?
you'll probably also want to check/change the oil before doing anything else.

Hi Ace, welcome to the site.
What canister are you refering to? If you mean the exhaust canister. That would indicate water in the exhaust. Which sounds normal for a bike that has been sitting. I am with your dad. A good twenty minute ride should be do the trick.

From what I gather, when you start an engine up, you get a lot of condensation in the exhaust.  Well, not to say the engine is making water, but water collects in the exhaust and you end up blowing it out as water or vapor.   Happens with cars, in winter you get a nice white cloud of water vapor coming out until the engine and exhaust gets up to temp.   As for the dark brown liquid, it's probably rust and crap that's built up in the system over the year that it has been sitting, mixing with the condensation. and coming out the exhaust drain hole at the lowest part of the canister.

Start it up and run the crap out of it.  The white vapor should go away as the exhaust heats up and dries out, and so will the brown liquid stop.  If you keep on getting white smoke, sorta take a whiff and see if you're not burning some oil.  Oh, every time you start the bike in cold weather, you'll see vapor :) No worry!
Title: only a guess but

if the bike is old and had been sitting for a while the oil rings could have gummed up and it has allowed some oil residue to leak through the exhaust down into your cannister much like a worn out 2 stroke or failing that you could have leaking valve stem seals but this would cause blue smoke when starting generally but would probably need to know more about the bike.
My friend had an 1100 katana that had gummed oil rings and caused a similar problem but also caused his to run a little funny with anything over 2/3 throttle are you having this problem as well.
Unfortnatly his bike would of required the rings to be replaced because they were really gummed up but sometimes a good hard flogging will bring them back.
If it is the above it would be advisable to have your valves in the head checked as well, but it does sound like an oil problem some where
Hope this helps but its only a guess

Title: well it wont be an oil problem

being only a 2000 model it wont be what i guessed and probably is a condensation problem.

also check the color of the gas (fuel) inside the tank and carbs....my bike was sitting for a while before i bought it and the gas was very dirty

if you have the same problem, drain the gas and clean the tank
