would it have been easier to use a replacement bulb that was colored one way or another?
Title: Blacklight or backlight?

Blacklights work because they have high levels of emitted UV.  You can't get UV from an LED.  Otherwise I would have a much less expensive laser setup.
Title: you can't?

Well, I can't tell you for certain as I'm not an expert, but...  I purchased a UV LED that would work as a backlight insert, and it *looks* like it's UV.  again, it's hard to say for certain, since I haven't tried it anywhere where anything was around that would glow.

oh, and you can get LEDs that just fit in (no need to disassemble anything).  details are here (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7400)

I would like to put some new colored lights in my instrument panel as well. I went to Superbrightleds.com and their are a bunch there. Will any of the 194 types work. There is one UV one on there that says non-polarized? Sorry everyone, I don't know a thing about electricity. If anyone could point me to the right ones I would appreciate it. I would like either blue or the UV colors.

Sorry I read "backlight"  Not BLACKLIGHT.

My mistake
Title: New UV LEDs

Sorry about that.  The UV LEDs have a die in them that is light reacitve and emits the UV.  That should work well if you can package it inside the case.

I ordered my bulbs from the superbrightled site. Hope I got the right ones. I actually ordered a few different types. I got the 6 LED blue bulbs and then the 4 LED UV and then the single bulb LED UV's all 194 size. I hope the multiple bulbs are not too bright, that's why I went ahead and got a couple single bulbs also just in case.

let me know how the UV bulbs work. i'm trying to find some 4-LED blues around here. i'd rather spend $10 to buy them from autozone than spend $5.18 on bulbs and $5.00 on S&H...
Title: have tried it

I have LED backlights...  not using the UV one, but I have other colors in my bike.

Multiple-LED is not too bright, in fact I'd suggest it.

I'll let you all know how it goes when I get them in. I am fixing to take the meters out. Don't know for sure how. I assume that the meters will pull out of the black case once I take everything loose. If anybody has any tips let me know. It does not appear to be real difficult. Once the bulbs get here, I want to have everything ready to go in.

Got everything ready now for when the bulbs come in. I had a few extra steps to get the instruments out. My suburban mach. bars ride real close to the faces of my instruments so I had to take the bars loose a little. Other than that, no problems. I replaced my bright light indicator with one of the bulbs from the instruments because it was blown. When the bulbs get here, I will be ready. :thumb:

I stopped by Oreilly Auto Parts tonite while me and the wife were out eating. They had a pair of 194 red LED's. I couldn't resist so I picked them up. I threw them in when I got home. They look cool as hell but they could stand to be a little brighter. I think the multiple bulb LEDS I have ordered will be better but these still look good. So, for those of you not wanting to order them, go to Oreilly's. I called Auto Zone and a bunch of other places today and they did not have them. The name brand of these bulbs are APC and the part # is 50.4071.b :thumb:
Title: incidently
Post by: richard on March 24, 2004, 12:46:44 AM
Incidently, When I installed mine, I noticed that the multi-LED lights were longer than the normal ones, and so I didn't push them all the way in, noticing that it seemed to be brighter.

Don't do this.  it's a stupid idea.

Don't get me wrong, it seemed to be a good idea at first, but it doesn't distribute the light completely, so it doesn't really work, and so now I need to get around to taking my speedo back off.   :guns:  :x

yeah, and when you reattach the cables, FINGER TIGHT IS NOT ENOUGH!!! nothing like riding home on a dark and stormy night when your speedometer spazzes out, then drops to zero. then the tach goes, and you have no idea how fast you're going.

Cool! My other LEDS came in. The blue with six bulbs is bright and looks very good although I am waiting for night to compare all of them. The ultra-violet look good as well but are single bulb and not near as bright.
