anyone know anything about the new joe rocket phoenix and velocity riding shoes? look to be a little more comfortable and cheaper than most boots, but provide litttle protection i'm sure.

I will look that up tomorrow in my Joe Rocket book and tell you more. Email me at louie@partmonster.com otherwise I will forget.
I know ICON has a 2 types that are rather nice. I own the SUPER DUTY BOOTS. They come in brown and black.
Description from book:
Molded Rubber shift lever nubs on top of your shoe.
Slip resistant rubber outsole for traction
Mid foot stabilizer system with aluminum buckle system
Hardened ankle, toe and heel cups
Nylon speed lacing system
My dealer cost it $67 so use that info accordingly when you purchase.
Not a big fan of Joe Rocket. Esp the Phoenix crap. I used to own the Phoenix jacket & pants. The zipper broke after owning it for two days. The threading seemed to unravel very easily.
Then I saw pictures of a guy who went down and crash tested the jacket. Apparently the mesh melted from the heat of the slide and gave 2nd and 3rd degree burns on the rider's skin. So much for protection. :?
Anyways, I sold my stuff awhile ago. I found Alpinestars to have a much better repuation and quality for their products.
For casual boots, look at Alpinestars Mk3. I have them, quite nice.
ASLAM.
I can atest to the ICON Super Duty boots. I'm wearing them now. I work in a office, we can wear jeans and boots. They look fairly normal so they don't draw to much attention.
They have a plastic "steel toe", a bit of plastic around the bottom of the heal, and these straps that hold the laces down so its harder for them to get caught on the bike.
They are fairly comfy, and aren't quite as tall as normal boot so its easier to get your foot under the shifter. I'm sure "real" motorcycle boots offer more protection, but since I don't feel like changing my shoes everytime I get on the bike I will acctually wear these. :thumb:
just my 2 cents...
i read somewhere on this board that the phoenix shoes are crap!
i have a phoenix jacket and phoenix gloves. no problems with them. had the jacket for over a year and the gloves for about 3 months now. no problems with them. i'm selling the jacket and liner (sorry, already sold, unless it doesn't fit him...), and i want to get different gloves. nothing against the joe rocket gloves, i just want gauntlet style gloves that will cover my cuffs better.
I bought a pair of the phoenix shoes and the freakin velcro decomposed out of one of them in 3 months.... It just atomized and cracked and fell right off of the fastener!
also, the 'ankle armor' is just sewn on like it was an afterthought. There's no structure to stabilize it or hold it in place. I can pull it back 90 degrees with one finger... that stuff would NEVER stay in place during a crash, if the shoes even stay on!!!
needless to say, I'm not happy with them. My advice... Save up another 40 bucks or so and get some REAL riding boots.
The mesh on the Phoenix gloves... well it surrenders like the French when you get in an accident :( The jacket is made from different material though.
As for the shoes... I'd say save up and get a real pair of boots, whether they are cycle boots or a sturdy pair of work boots with a padded ankle. Those JR shoes look like they'd disintergrate on impact :o
I agree with Turkina. The only redeming feature of the phoenix shoes is the lack of laces. I only bother wearing the Phoenix shoes for across-town trips. these days, since I have a pair of Oxtar TCS boots that I got for 99 bucks at motorcyclecloseouts.com. The Oxtars are much nicer and properly constructed for the task of protecting ankles and toes. :thumb:
Well, I don't know about those shoes and this is kind of a thread jack.
Thread Jack Start:
I have some boots (they aren't actual riding boots, they're work boots) tha tare pretty good. They are some type of WORX brand but they do really good. Real sturdy and everything. And they only cost me $50!!! Best investment for boots.
Thread Jack End:
i have a pair of Teknic Freeway boots (they are like MX boots in size wise.. goes up the calf) but it works good. got them for 49 from newenough.
I also have my work boots with steel toes that i sometimes use.. works fine.. its got a reinforced ankle.
