Title: (Naked chics) What did I do to my poor bike???
Post by: smoker on March 30, 2004, 01:19:27 PM
Hey y'all...

maybe someone can help (perhaps this srinath or pablo who's names I see so often)...

Got a '96 with just under 7k mi.  It ran fine when I got it, a little cold, and weak at low RPM's, but running as I suspect it should've, from what I've found so far.  So here's what I did, in chrono order.

-Drilled holes in muffler in endcap around exhaust pipe.
-Overfilled oil (slightly), 2 days later, drained, and filled to proper level (don't have all the right metric sockets yet)
-Added concentrated fuel system cleaner to full tank (enough to treat 30 gallons or so)
-Siphoned gas from tank and put in my F-150 (those fords can always use a little lovin')
-removed air filter to spray carb+choke cleaner directly into carb, then replaced everything.
-Plugged holes in muffler with bolts, threaded and JB welded into place (don't want them rattling out and going through some poor sot's windsheild and 70mph.)

somewhere between the added oil and fuel system cleaner, bike developed severely retarded throttle response below 4-5k.  Also no power in 1st gear until 4-5k. (Will stall when pulling out unless you really get on it).

Anyway, I posted these questions before, but not the list of what I did.  maybe someone can help a newbie?

OHBYTHEWAY, Just put the thing about naked chics so y'all'd take a look at my post...hehehehe :bs:

thanks in advance...

O.K., I'll bite and start this off.

Is your bike stock, with the exception of the afforementioned mods?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the bikes all original, and I'm pretty sure the previous owner didn't mess with anything (carb adjustment, etc...)

To catch my eye you should write carb issues... in the title...
Anyway Did you check for air leaks in the intake. Also where is the floats set and where is the air screws set. If that is all fine my next guess will be to check the rubber hose from the botom of airbox... also the cam timing could contribute to a delayed response... I know its nevcre happened to a GS before but a VW beetle will do that whole delayed acceleration hit if the valve timing is set 1 tooth off or there is too much lash in the thing. You might also have a slide that comes up too fast... but on a stock bike its unlikely... how is it if you open the accelerator slowly.
Cool.

I haven't gotten into the carbs yet.  So, I'm not sure about air screw, float height, etc...  As far as cam timing, the bike ran fine for the first week or so I had it.  Is that something that would just go all the sudden?  It will throttle up if you go slowly, still with some delay, but it takes some time (several seconds) for the rpm's to die down.  Sometimes they'll come down to around 3k and stay there for a few seconds, then return to the 1200-1500 range.  Also the idle adjustment screw doesn't seem to do nearly as much as it did before...idle speed barely changes.  Choked idle also increased from about 4k to 5.5-6k.  I've noticed that my front fender is quite melted (It had a mark when I bought it, but now is quite wavy and distorted).  I haven't got the manual yet, and I'm not sure if I want to take out the carbs just based on what I could find on the net.

Just figured out I could edit, so now the naked chics are in the header, not that it matters much.  Anyway, another question.  To buy or not to buy a rejet kit.  I WILL rejet, however, I read that you can just buy the jets, and some washers and do the same thing, for significantly less cash.  But never worked on carbs before, so a bit nervous to go in without directions.  Should I spend the money on the manual that I saved not buying the whole kit, just the jets?  Will probably get high flow air filter too, (sounds kinda like engine is gasping), but not sure about exhaust.  Can't spring for V&H or Yosh, but maybe the cobra F1S or F1R... what are the differences between the S and R??  Street and Racing??

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Check all the connections btw airbox and carbs and carbs and engine. Spray wd40 around them, if it surges and makes white smoke, you found the leak.

For rejetting directions, see my web page:

what Miket said---/\

also, Id guess that since this is all you did and it ran fine before then it HAS to be somethign you did. one guess would be that the concentrated carb cleaner dislodged some spec of crud and is blocking a pilot(?) jet hole)...

otherwise, vacuum leak is a good try.
Title: Just to...

Just to go against Pablo... my $$$ is on lean, lean lean lean as hell lean.... Front fender melting also means your oil level is low... put enought oil in it before the bloody thing seizes up. WD40 around manifolds will make it smoke and rev up if its sucking air. Else Take everything apart and clean the living daylights out of it. Set air screw to 3 out and see. Dont buy kit... I am seroiusly tihnking the kit leaves the mid range leaner than ideal... I will try it sometime and let you know. Jet it wil individual jets, or just 40 pilots. Also exhaust leak... make fender hot. Feel for hot drafts in front of exhuast.
Cool.

Are you sure you got all of the "concentrated fuel system cleaner" out?  That sounds like a pretty high concentration for a 4.5-gallon tank!

I'm sure that if you have refilled the tank since, the stuff is as good as gone fromt the tank itself.  But have you ridden the bike far enough to burn through the fuel in the hoses and float bowls?

It was that little tiny O-ring in the carbs that's easy to lose if you're not looking for it.  It's right underneath those black plastic covers over the diaphragms.  It fell out when I was messing around the other day, but when I realized what it probably was, I looked around on my sidwalk and was quite suprised to find it, after it had been raining a few days since I had my bike apart.  So I put it back in, and my bike seems to be running as it should...real lean cause I haven't put inthe 40 pilots and 125 mains yet...  But thanks for all the help everyone.

My bike did the same thing it was my airbox connection one boot was off causeing the bike to run very lean pull the carbs all the way out and attach the airbox to the carbs outside of the frame then put the whole thing back in  it makes it a lot easier to get the connection right
