Hey all,
I'm looking to spice things up a bit in the GS power  , so naturaly I'm thinking intake and rejet, but I wana keep the stock air box and pipe. ( It's nice and quiet :thumb: and I wana do this myself so no welding  )
How well do you think the engine will breath with the stock air box and pipe? (If I throw in an aftermarket Air filter and rejet)
Will it give a power boost, or should I not bother?
BTW money is tight...
Thanks in advance, and I'd apreciate any other options...

hate to tell ya, but the gissers potential is not much, if you want some fun factor, have you considered a 15t front sprocket, bout 20 at the stealer :thumb:
So, there's no breathing life into it :( . OK. :dunno: I'll put in a 15 touth. I was hopin to avoid that  .
How does that work anyway, is that 15 teath for the 1st gear, or the drive chain part of it?
Thanks for the reply...yamahonkawazuki... you know it's your argument that added to my signiture quote :) ... ahh memories...

Hey on the 535... you put a full system on it??? That exhaust system is so darned pretty... IMHO the best feature of a 535. Could I just drill out the exhaust and get rid of the collector and have the same effect... cos the headers flow seem limited by the awkward bend in the rear one.
Cool.

The Cobra system is slash cut and looks very, very similar to stock, but is a true dual exhaust and eliminates the ugly exhaust "tub" under the swingarm. The performance gain was amazing.
That tub can be removed and I can drill out the mufflers... and make connectors that hook up headers to the pipes wihtout the tub... Will look just like stock but flow faster... 1 inch hole through all the baffles... I dont think it has many baffles...
Also funny you call it tub... on my first virago the thing go a few pinhole leaks and on the bottom its drainage hole got some tar or somehitng like that and had gotten blocked... and the pin hole leak as I was riding in the rain took in water and in ~ an hour it nearly killed the bike. When I revved up it would make loud bubbling sounds... I saw it was also making splashing noises when you rock it side to side... So I drilled the left side with a dremel tool and water flowed for an hour... Funny stuff... but I was terrified when 30 miles form home on a dark night it was losing power...
Cool.

I've alway gone with full aftermarket systems for exhausts on my bikes and quads. If I do anything with the GS, I'll probably get a Vance & Hines. But for now the quiet is a nice change. If I thought I could get the same performance increase from it that I did the Virago I'd do it in a heartbeat.
:)
For the GS and the virago the full system is sorta a waste... the restriction to flow in the GS is the can... all in the can. The second most restricting thing in the GS is the ports in the head. That exhaust post cannot flow worth a penny... Full systems on bikes that dont have these modded do nothing. In the 535 the Tight left bend from the rear cylinder is the choker... next to the tub and the 2 pipes exiting out of 1 crammed dime sixed hole and then branching into the top pipe... I'd slice the collector off and run the 2 headers straight into the 2 pipes... and adress their restrictions with a drill... Fluid flow... well it speaks to me... When you have a dime sized port a 2 inch dia pipe isn't doing you any good.
Cool.

Actually the bend in the rear pipe is an attempt to equalize the exhaust length between the front and rear cylinders. The difference between stock and Cobra in performance was astounding regardless of valve or pipe diameter. The Cobra pipes also maintained the pipe loop to equalize length.

when you put in the 15 tooth sprocket (smaller then stock) every gear will be shorter.....the speed and rpm will change bacuse the engine will be ruinning faster then before at the same speed
example: if you could cruise at 40 mph in 3 gear at 6000 rpm stock, with the 15 t sprocket and in 3rd gear the rpm will rise to about 6500

You cant really say that... unless you gutted the tub and drilled out the stock can and made connectors and made it flow. I think the stock headers are not that bad, the bend is still a restriction and I dont see how they could have gotten around that... yes its to slow down the rear cylinders exhaust flow so it will work like equal length pipes... but cobra also has to slow it to make it feel equal... BTW in systems where there is that monstro tub... the killer is the tub... my brother has a eli that had the tub but aftermarket mufflers installed after the tub, On my eli I have gotten away from the tub and I have custom made Y pipes and a sport bike can on it... and the difference is night and day. Mine behaves very very close to a D&D full system which was basically meant for drag bikes cos it made most of its power up high... mine is not that bad... low end is great too... and the eli has outer pipes that make a silly bend to step around the frame rails as well. Looking at the virago, the tub and 1 tiny pipe comming out and going to the lower muffler and then forking out into the top... makes it obvious... its gotta go. I may do it later this year... its currently about to be sold... if dont sell for a few months... I do it and let you know.
Cool.

Well belive it or not that answered it. Thanks all :thumb:
See ya around on a still stock bike.

PS-Feel free to chat away kids...
huh?? :?
so what answers did you get out of this???
what are the choices for slipons??
Hey small Q about the 535 ...
At ~ 90 running WFO... i seem to be runing out of gas... now I doubt its lean... I have 10 sizes bigger mains and ~4 mm higher floats ... so I think its actually runnig out of gas... Your fuel pump ever give you problems...
Cool.
Srinath.
Well Frost...
I learned that If I don't wana spend a bit of $ on it, Don't temper with it. :thumb:
No stage 3 for me, no sproket either. :(
I still might get a K&H air filter and move up to #40 jets. :dunno: But that's more for quicker warm up purposes then power. ;) Some how spending a 1/2 a grand on squeezing out 7-8 hp doesn't do it for me. I'd save up and trade it in for a new sv650s (with a lower fairing promptly installed :guns: ). That way it's worth every penny. :)
Cheers.
-Denis S.
More like an extra $50-60 and 3-5 hp... not 1/2 a grand and 7-8... The K&N and 40's I am assuming you do anyway. All you need after that is a aftermarket can off another sportbike (ebay) and 127.5 mains... oh well you are going to change mains anyway when you put in K&N... BTW stock pipe and K&N with restrictor = 125, aftermarket pipe and no restrictor = 127.5.
Cool.
Srinath.
Now you've got my attention. What is this magical can for $50-60? (Goes to check ebay) sure enough :o http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2471553456&category=35596
$50(can)+20(ship)+?$$$(weld on)
It is much better then paying for an aftermarket one I agree. And you are correct, it's not 1/2 a grand (That would be a new aftermarket full pipe and stage 3 kit installed)
I'll look into it. BTW thanks for the
"stock pipe and K&N with restrictor = 125, aftermarket pipe and no restrictor = 127.5. "
It'll be usefull. :thumb:
Hey, are you still making bars??? How much$ ???
Chears,

:icon_rolleyes:
OK I made 95 easy on the way back today... morining was colder... so its leaner than ideal??? maybe. Mine simply rips... 95 is easy and its still all stock. Except jetting. The pipe will be modded... if it doesn't sell in a few weeks.
OK about the cans.. That is a stock GSXR can... worthless really.
Get an aftermarket can. Katana or old school GSXR... non flange type... clamp on type. I'll see if I can find a link...

Yea... some like that... serch and dont get carried away. I bought some last year... ~$70 including shipping. It was perfect and stainless steel... aluminum would not have ended up that high.
Cool.

Knock yourself out. I am gonna sign off now and when I come back on monday there'd be no more stoopid questions about where to get slip ons cheap... OK Lemme pray for that...
Cool.
