hi, im new to riding and am thinking this new gs500f is perfect for me. not too fast, not anemic, and well styled. I was just wondering exactly what the bikes specs are. How much h.p. does it have? what is its tested 0-60 and 1/4 mile time?
(i know a newb shouldnt be concerned about that stuff, but i want an idea of how fast this bike is)
welcome to the board!
The GS is an awesome first bike, though some might caution you about buying the faired model right away, because dropping the plastic-covered GS500F is way more expensive than dropping the unfaired, earlier models. You might want to make your mistakes on an older GS before bumping up, but that's up to you dude.
Others will give you the stats, but when wound up the GS will take or pace pretty much any car on the road.
Welcome...Welcome
Buy a GS...you'll love it.
I have the same bike in yellow. By any chance have you found anyplace where you can get a replacement exhust for the new bike. I cant seem to find anything. The bike is too quiet. It needs to be heard more by the cars as you are driving down the highway.
Also dont wory about dropping the bike as long as you dont drive like a maniac. :)
I am in agreeance with vtlion on this one. I just bought one myself yesterday actually. I had my mind set on a bike with fairings, but the more I looked the bike the more I like the naked look. Plus, statics say that I will drop it within a year, so why not go the cheap route instead of spending all my hard earned college loans? I picked up a 01 for 2k in damn nice shape. Its my first street bike, but I used to own a couple of dirt bikes but thats about it as far as my knowledge of bikes according to experience. I have read everything there is, and at least you are considering the smaller bike as a first.
good luck, and keep it rubber side down!
Well I will add to the stats..I almost had mine a year before the coyote collision.....fun times!
oh man, im so stoked about this. I cant WAIT to get my gs, it just sounds like the perfect bike for a beginner that doesn't want a sissy bike.
Sorry, no point to this post, just expressing my enthusiasm for this bike.
no problem, we all like to gloat about the gs. Let us know, when you find one.
i dropped mine...or it dropped itself. It was sittn in the driveway and fell over. No wind, no animals or people around. Fine except a bent clutch. I'm glad i had no plastic to shatter.
H.P.=39.2@8500
ft.-lb torque=26.6@7000
corrected 1/4 mile=13.65 sec. @ 95.5mph
60-80 roll-on top gear=8.52sec
these are what is said in Motorcyclist magazine. It says nothing about 0-60.
Not many companies make axhaust for a GS but with a welder, anything can be done! :thumb:
mine dropped itself the day i was taking my license test. passed the test with a bent clutch lever. a friend dropped it in his backyard. was walking it along, away from the bonfire, and bam! no damage. i dropped it sitting in my fiance's driveway, on the phone. i was sitting on it, rocking back and forth, forgot my bars were locked. rock forward, BAM! i now know the TRUE purpose of the balance caps: to keep you from fragging up your throttle when you dunce out and drop the damn thing.
but, i only had mine for about 3, maybe 4 month before i REALLY dropped it. there is no equal for experience.
The 0-60 is VERY debatable.
I will get opposition to this, but I have had my slightly modded '02 GS to run 0-100km/h (62mph) in a tick over 4 seconds. That was with some good ol fashioned burnouts to get the tire sticky, a perfectlystraight and flat track, and a very sticky surface. Not to mention a 6000RPM clutchdrop. Like I have stated in the past, I have a freak GS that seems to destroy most other GS's performance #'s. The reason for this is unknown, but it happens, routinley.
I've got the naked model, a 2000. I tend to agree that if you're new to biking, there's less to damage if you drop the older naked versions. On the other hand, who should we suggest to buy the plastic covered models? :? Suzuki has now taken a great beginner's bike and covered it with pretty plastic that will get messed up when dropped. So, heck if you've got the $$$ and like the looks, it's still a GREAT first bike under that plastic. :thumb:
Yea mine has dropped itself 5 times ... the 90 twice... the 91 never... whooo hooo... now I sell it before it falls over.
Cool.

you might want to check out motorcyclist's stats on the gs500e

Well, if you have the $$$ for a new bike, then go for the GS500F :thumb: . Why not? :dunno: If you want, you can buy it for 5K and sell the new fairing off of it for $800+ . Now that's a $4200 new bike. GOOD DEAL 8) . (I would also check that the mounting points for a headlight mirrors and turn signals are all there) :nono: .
I sat on the new one. The seat is firmer (not sure if it's better or not, but it does tilt you forward more) The fairing seems to be well made, but out of place. It doesn't hug the body like other bikes out there.

Here is the data from all the GS500 tests I have found:
http://us.f2.yahoofs.com/bc/40396913_138bb/bc/My+Documents/gs500tests.txt?bfV2EfABHuss7.1EThe figures mentioned above from Motorcyclist were from a comparo between GS500 and EX500 in their 10-01 issue and it showed the 0-60 times, not the best 0-60 times I have seen though:

long as you dont ride like a squid :thumb:
Hey if you've never ridden a motorcycle or mashed the gas pedal on a v10 powered car then that 39hp is plenty. Trust me the power to weight ratio is what matters. You can out accelerate any car w/ a v6 and still get 40-55mph :thumb:
