Title: help no spark
Post by: oph2odragon on April 12, 2004, 09:26:38 PM
I have a 92 gs that is getting no spark to the plugs. I am new to working on motorcycles so any help would be greatly appreciated.

maybe you have the same problem as i do....bad coil or coils in your case...maybe bad wires....loose connection....maybe even bad spark plugs but that doesn't happen much

the best way is to get on of those electric meters that measure electicity...first check if you have power going to the spark plug cables...then if there is nothing, check the coils and then the rotor

Transmission in neutral and kill switch set to RUN? ;)

Try looking for spark at night, or at least in the shade.  It can be hard to see in daylight.  If there is no spark at either plug, then I'd suspect the kill or sidestand switches.  It would be odd for both coils to die at the same time, for example.

If the starter is turning the engine, then you have a good fuse, closed ignition (key) switch, and closed clutch lever switch.  After that, power to the ignition goes through the kill switch, and through the sidestand relay, so, try flipping the kill switch off/on/off/on a couple of times and see if that gets things working again; or fiddle with the sidestand.  The sidestand position sensor is known to go wonky on some bikes, so put the bike on center stand, and check that the relay switches on when the sidestand goes up.
Title: Motor cranking...

OK the clutch, sidestand and kill switches will not let the starter spin. If starter spins but no spark in either cylinder... I'd suspect the black box or the advancer being off the motor or some like that or of course bad connections to and from both these parts... the crank trigger and black box. If you tested for spark and have spark in 1 cyl but not other... that means bad ignition coil or bad crank trigger... or again bad connections to either.
Cool.
Srinath.

I'm having the same trouble - No Spark.... signal generator is tested and seems fine.... I'm guessing it's the black box again because I originally had to replace it when I got the bike (via eBay, it's a '95).... what would cause it to go bad again in less than a year?

Has anyone got a spare to loan/rent for testing?
