all i can say after reading this is wow. what a crazy area to ride through. it's something i wish i could do, but yet, think it would be so unnerving i don't know if i could handle it. make sure you read the whole thing and take the time to let the pictures load.

Definitely a worthwhile read.
I found Elena's comment that the incident will preserve the image of life during Soviet-communism quite interesting; I had never thought about the fact that Cherboybl has essentially become a historical time capsule.

Very interesting! Great photo's too. Disturbing.
That was so interesting, thanks for the link. Westerns probably have very little idea of the ramifications of this big incident.
ASLAM.
Wow. That's almost beyond comprehension. Love all the pictures. Love how she relates it to real people, real lives, and real history. She brings it to life. This is just incredible. Well done.
Have a good one.

My friend was telling me about this site. It's really an awesome catalogue of one of the eeriest places in the world. Just thinking about how the radiation is ~300x normal levels on the asphalt is startling. She mentions that walking 10 meters off the road would send the Geiger counter off the scale...:o
I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. Of course, it's a terrible tragedy and all, but the pictures are somewhat compelling...like a glimpse into something from Mad Max.
holy crap i just read the entire thing. Stupid communists cant govern anything. Right now im only 25 miles from the nuclear power plant in Glen rose, Tx. Couldnt imagine that happening here.
This is the best account I have read on the meltdown. One reason humans fair worst than chickens and cockroaches is the amount of water in the human body.In world war two when (we) dropped the bombs on Japan, the explosion destroyed everthing in its path. In some cases the only thing left of people was the shadow cast on the ground. It would be a good idea to wear a mask underneith your helmet because of radioactive dust particals in the air.You can still suffer from low level radiation contamination if injested ,asperated,or obsorbed through the skin.

I work at a Nuclear power plant, as a co-op student. Let me tell you they are damn safe. Any fears these days about nuclear power are nearly unfounded. The only question left is when are they going to get Yucca mountain open as a nuclear waste repository.
