Title: Engine noise
Post by: Jasco on April 19, 2004, 07:04:51 PM
Wondering if this engine noise is normal.  It sounds like a tapping or ticking noise that increase with rpm.  Sort of reminds me of a diesel engine.  Sort of sounds like lifter noise on a car engine.  Crap movie with sound below if that will help.

Thanks

Matt,

I'm logged in from home, and my dialup isn't up to the task for movies of any size.  Can you describe the noise in a little more detail?  Does it occur at all rpms, or does it come and go?  Does it do it when giving it throttle only, but not when letting off (or vice versa?).  You could use an old mechanic's stethescope trick with a long screwdriver; hold it up against parts of the engine with your ear firmly at the end of the handle.  You should get an idea of where it's coming from.

GS's tend to have trouble with counterbalancer bushings going bad prematurely (in front of the crank; bushings at the ends, near the sidecovers).  How many miles does your GS have?

14,000 miles

Sound is all the time but less noticeable when riding.  I think because the engine(normal)/wind noise is louder.

Matt,

I've got cable and I waited several minutes and the file didn't load.

My bike does that too... it's a 96 with 2.5k miles.  I only notice it when it's idling though.  When I'm on or letting off the throttle, the bike makes enough noise and drowns the ticking out, or it goes away  :dunno:

Well sounds to me like the valves are out of adjustment, esp. yours' Matt with the higher mileage. Check it out and get them adjusted soon.

Sounds like valves to me, too.

Mine has the same sort of problem, I checked my valves and my cam chain tension and both seemed ok, so I dont know what the problem is.
