Title: Parts and tools for a tune-up
Post by: Jasco on April 21, 2004, 05:11:43 PM
Could some one compile or direct me to a list of tools and parts needed for a basic tuneup on  GS.  Including:

changing oil
valve adjustment
air filter
plugs
etc...

My manual is on the way, but i probably won't be getting it til next week and i wanted to get things bought and ready.  I think the only major thing I need is a valve adjustment and it is about a 3 week wait at the stealers to get a tune-up here.

Thanks

Matt

Socket set and an adjustable wrench...i forget the sizes i think i recalled using a 21mm and some 10 mm sockets maybe but don't quote me on that...cardboard to line your floor and cat litter to soak up any oil, a rag.

For an oil change you will need a large socket (17mm or 21mm) for the oil drain plug and a small socket (10mm) for the oil filter housing nuts.

Check out the thread What size socket for engine oil drain plug? (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7514) for info on the likely size of your oil drain plug.  As far as we can tell, it's

21mm for '89-'97 models
and
17mm for '99+ models
(Not sure which size the '98s came with.)

To swap or service your air filter you only need:valve adjustment needed ??? (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5219)

DIY Tappet Decompressor? Is there anything like that.. (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3670)
Shims size needed??? (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5770)[/list:u]=====================================
