Hi everyone,
I just got a '91 Suzuki GS500. It was pretty badly neglected and left outside for several years. I have been riding it 'as is' and I couldn't take the pink and purple color scheme any longer! Plus I think it may be unsafe to ride. The chain had WAY too much slack in it and none of the parts (like the tank) was bolted down at all. Rear pegs were cut off with a hack saw or something before i got it. So now my bike is up at the bike shop for a little overhaul. It is being taken down to the frame and it should be awesome when finished.
I can't wait for it to be done and I will post the pics of the bike (can I do that here?)as soon as it is finished. I anticipate its completion at the beginning of May, give or take.
Here is a list of modifications I am having done:
All parts are being removed from the frame.
All rusted, faded parts will be returning to original silver color.
The frame will be grinded down and smoothed out. All rust removed.
The frame will be returning to its original silver color.
Rear peg mount brackets (what is left of them) will be shaved.
Stock turn signals will be shaved and replaced with small aftermarkets.
All purple parts will be painted basic flat black.
New Black and sliver decals from '01 will be applied (stock placement).
New grips.
Rear stock liscence plate bracket and fender will be removed.
New custom under tail will clean up the rear end.
Stock exhaust will be removed and either blasted and painted or replaced.

thanks nomak. i have been riding my gs500 for the past 2 months (bout 1000 miles). the bike is fast, fun, and incredibly capable. i love the gs twin. i've recieved several offers to buy it. all have been delightfully turned down. :lol:

i know a guy that has a chopper shop/sport racing shop. he is doing the work for me. so the price may be higher at your local bike shop.
the price including labor and parts will be around 500- 600 dollars. but this price doesnt include everything.
some of the work will go out to a paint shop(tank, fender, & rear plastics). this is about $300.
and i am ordering factory decals. tack on another $100.
we have agreed on ballpark prices and limits. he has just gotten started so i will find out the true costs a bit closer to completion.
i cant freaking wait to get my GS back. in fact i want to sing a song about it. wanna hear it? here it go.

WOW, sounds great. lots of work going into that gs. One suggestion (I always have ONE dont I?) is to use the silver factory stickers from the '02 instead of the '01. Personally I think they're better and they maintain the family resemblance to all the GS bikes (GSXR scheme). The '01 is an anomoly in the Suzuki graphics 'family', IMO. And I have an '01 bike so I can say that.

you know, now that ive done a lot more looking, ive realized that some of the specs will change slightly. such as me actually having a '92, not a '91. duh-me. i thought it was the '01 decals i wanted but '02 is the one i was thinkin of. i'm still not totally sure of excately what it is gonna be like when it is finished. i am sorta doing it up streetfighter styley. i didnt know that my plans for the bike fell into a style category. right on. you guys can decide when i post pics. see ya's. :thumb:
In my state, if you have a seat that can carry a passenger, then you've gotta have passenger footpegs. Of course, it's academic unless you have inspections or PO a LEO.
not to worry about the foot pegs legality. i live in orlando, fl and they dont inspect anything. you should see some of the heaps rolling around orlando. anyways, i am considering making it a one seater and putting on a rear cowl. this would allow me to have a seat that reaches back a few more inches than oem. i'm 6' tall and i could use a touch more room. i like the tail cowl/seat of the gsxr 600 alot. im considering grafting on some thing like that.
