Title: Went for my first "ride"
Post by: MarlboroMan on April 23, 2004, 08:31:52 PM
Well, I went for my first ride on something other than a city street or highway (2-lane highway through a canyon), and now have some more questions.  First, I'm amazed that Northern CA still has that many frickin' insects flying around this time of year.  It seems like after about 30 minutes I've had so many strikes on my visor I can't see clearly enough for me to be comfortable.  How do you folks without front fairings handle this?  Carry windex in your jacket?

Also, what's the best stuff to clean your helmet and visor with?

Carrying glass cleaner is a necessity if you're riding a nekkid bike.  Shop around for a suitable 4 oz. container, with a pump sprayer if you're lucky, Spray on, wipe around gently, wipe dry with cotton bandana.  With care, you can still make a shield last all season despite the bug hits.

2 rags.  2 zip-lock bags.  Wet one rag and put it in a bag.  Leave the other dry.  Put it in the other bag.  As long as the bugs don't sit overnight, they will come off very easily with the plain water on the rag.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I went to the store and bought a bottle of bug repellent (oh the irony) with a pump-action sprayer, emptied it, and filled it with windex.  I wrapped the bottle in a piece of a clean cotten t-shirt, and it's in my inside jacket pocket now.
