Title: The Case of the Disappearing Message Threads
Post by: Kerry on April 23, 2004, 09:52:14 PM
The new version of this message board started up on 20 Jan 2003.  The oldest thread I can find now is dated in mid-April 2003.

It looks like the first 3 months of good info is GONE.   :o   In the past 2 days I have run across 4 posts where links to older threads have lead to a blank wall.   :?

Are we running out of room?  Are the old threads being archived?  Or are they just dropping off the edge into the bit bucket?  :x

SAY IT ISN'T SO, JOHN!

It is a case of space vs money?  Just say so - we'll take up a collection or something.  Only stop the "bleeding" before we lose more of the old posts!

i think the issue isnt that..

john had turned on pruning at one time.. but that ended up nuking a lot of threads..

infact i still dont know what happened to the file that had dealers that we like to deal with..

originally pruning was set for ForSale forum.. but when we started loosing threads it was supposedly killed..

not sure if that darn pruning is still running..

More over the back up thing is finacky.. i havent been able to make a reliable backup in a while - i hope john is able to.. cause it just wont backup for me for some reason. It starts sending data and fails.. or it just wont send data to me and time out. I guess root level access is needed to do backup's the manual way.

I have talked to a few ppl they say its strange that this is happening..however their boards are not as big as ours.. i checked the Phpbb logs but there is no mention about the backup issue there with regards to my problem.

Edit:

See the thread titled " who are you and where you from".. I started that thread.. but somehow we ended up with 7 missing pages .. dont ask me where those went...

Yes.  When we had that weird corruption of the database it nuked some files and then I had turned on autopruning and it reaped havoc.

Rest assured autoprune is OFF and will remain so.

I just took another look.  There are currently 111 pages of posts in the General Discussion forum.  If you disregard the oldest two threads (which are Polls) the oldest thread is dated 25 June(!!) 2003.

The last time I checked I didn't pay attention to the 2nd- and-3rd-oldest threads, or the page count.  So I'm not sure whether we're still losing info.

Somebody remind me to check again in a week or two.

I guess we're holding steady.

There are currently 117 pages of threads in the General Discussion forum (up from 111), and the oldest non-poll thread is still dated 25 June 2003.

Whew!  Now I can relax....
