Title: I got my baby back..!!! (and i ain't talkin' ribs....)
Post by: juggernaught on April 24, 2004, 06:06:08 AM
Ok...so after a horrible winter and being t-boned last spring and then meeting my future fiance in the E.R. and after a couple of months waiting for parts...i got referred to a somewhat grouchy but really good mechanic to work on my 2002 GS.  I got it back yesterday but after riding about 10 miles i sprung a leak at the gasket....a bloody defective brand new gasket...so i need a new one.  But anyhow....here's what i had done:

1- Progressive springs

2- K+N air filter

3- Stage 1 jet kit

4- Vance and Hines full exhaust

5- Napolean mirrors

6- Pirelli Demons

7- Me in a new jacket.

I must say...the bike runs better than it did when it was new.  It responds very well.  The traction on them Demons is awesome.  And the V+H....aww man....what a sweet sound.  Even turned a few heads.  Anyway...just wanted to share.  My baby had a performance facelift and it was well worth it.  Now for that bloody gasket.

Happy Saturday...!!!

I'll try and post a pic.....keep forgetting to do that.

Glad to hear you're doin well, when is the weding? ;)
The reason I ask is that in Russia we have this saying, "It will heal beffore the weding" (do svadbi zazgevet).
I'm glad you are proving that to be correct!

Are we talking valve cover gasket?
I had the same shaZam! happen after bout 80 miles.  Plug portion of
valve cover gasket blew out 300 yards from the Holland Tunnel.
The damn gasket felt very brittle.  I was able to break off pieces
with my finger nail.

exactly what happened MP.  I had thaf half quarter shaped bit of rubber on the right side of the valve cover just pop out and this was just outside the midtown tunnel.  Right now all i did was shave off a bit of it and plugged it back in (with a lot of work) But i need a new one.  Hey does pressure build up in that area of the engine..??  i mean it happened so suddenly.  And as for that other question.....the wedding is still a ways off....but it's not a matter of "if" just "when"

Hm, there's a breather tube from the top of the valve cover back to the top of the airbox.  It looked very open to me: there was a filter that looked like coarse steel wool underneath it, presumably to keep metal filings from going back to the air intake.  But otherwise, it looked like any pressure under the valve cover should be vented to the airbox.

If you had a K&N put on, did someone cap the breather hose?  It should probably have a PCV valve put in it if there's no airbox.

My blew out in exactly the same place.
I plugged it back in and put a rag over it and tiewrapped it until I got it back to the Suzuki dealer. He has ordered a new gasket and was very embarassed about this.  I have to call him and warn him to check the gasket before he puts it in.
There can't be much pressure but there is some.  The lower part of my leg was covered in oil and so was the engine.  When I started the engine with the plug out just to check how much oil was being pushed out it was quite a bit.
The tiewraps and rags were supplied by two mechanics at a repair facility just before the Holland tunnel.

Most of my problems on this bike have been from the bloody gasket.  Same thing happened though my right leg, intake, engine case were all being sprayed with oil.  Made for some pretty smoke too.  I think i orgered a gasket from a shop a few months ago that i forgot to pick up.  Gonna see if they still have it. In any case i ordered a new one so hopefully it'll be in by the end of the week. And like you i'm gonna make damn sure it's on right.  Now i'm gonna try to ride to the shop.  Heres to no mishaps
