I am rebuilding my carbs for the first time.
I've got everything back together except the needles, and can't recall how they were assembled. I know where they go, but don't know in what order to assembly the white and orange plastic ring parts. Can someone describe that?
Also, is there an O-ring with the needles? I have one very small O-ring, but am not completely sure it goes with the needle, and if so, what order relative to the white and orange parts and the C-clip.

Carb needle order is:
needle
white plastic ring (goes on needle from the pointy end, all the way to the neck)
metal washer goes on top of the blunt side.
then the orangeish spring holder ring.
then the spring.
The rubber o-rings go on the carb body between it and the diaphram cover to seal the sync- tubes.
Clicky here (http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit.com/partsbandit/showschematic.asp?dept_id=723025) for a pic of the carb components and how they get along.

...except you won't have the two little copper washers between the white plastic spacer and the clip.
whats the point of rebuilding ur carbs?
They can get gunked up over time, especally if you let it sit for any length of time.
why cant i just spray tht carb cleaning shaZam! into it?
how often should i do this carb reasemmbly
Where do the following hoses go to:
- Right side of tank. Ambient/breather?
- Left carb between carb bodies. I saw something about attaching it to the petcock, but am not sure where.
- Top "T" from carbs. Ambient/breather?
I just had my carbs off today, so this is fairly fresh in my memory.
- Right side of tank. Ambient/breather? No, if you have a California model, that goes back to the emissions canister.
- Left carb between carb bodies. I saw something about attaching it to the petcock, but am not sure where. Yes, that would be your vacuum hose. It goes onto the smallest connection on your petcock. I believe it is on the left side of the petcock, furthest back and pointing slightly down.
- Top "T" from carbs. Ambient/breather? Yes, runs over the airbox and down between the airbox and battery. Usually held in place by clamp on the bottom left screw of the airfilter.
Where's the emissions canister? I have a CA bike, but don't recall seeing the breathers going to anything like that...
Its under the battery. If you aren't the original owner, its possible its been removed; in which case I don't know what is done with the hose.
I may be doing some more carb tuning in the next couple of days. If I get a chance I'll track down where that hose goes and post a picture.
Note that when I remove my tank, I disconnect that hose from the tank when I lift the tank to shut off the fuel. Then I just leave it there until I put the tank back on. I never disconnect it from its other end. Same with that other hose that comes down from the the bottom of the tank near the fuel shutoff valve.
OK, that 4th hose runs to a connector at the front right corner of the battery holder. Below is a pic from the right side of the bike looking at the area below the seat. At the top center of the photo is the 4th hose coming down from the top.

BTW, see the prominent hose below the connector running to somewhere under the airbox. That black thing you can see under the hose is the CA emissions canister. Sorry I forgot to label it when editting the photo.
Thanks, that's very helpful, I'll check it out.
Any general tips on how to reassembly all the hoses to the carbs and tank for future reference? It was rediculously difficult to attach the short hoses and cables in such a tight space. Or is that just the nature of motorcycles?
I'd get rid of all that emissions equipment and put plugs on the brass leads on the carburetor. I'm also not a fan of the bulky and annoying stock airbox, but thats another issue.

I am afraid, that is the nature of the GS. Having the airbox off when doing most of the hosery helps. Needlenose pliers help. Lots of swearing helps. (My mood, anyway.)
Best investment though: Trainign as a gynecologist.
Only down to eart hint I have: Order of assembly of the two hoses on the tank valve: Always install the "On" hose first, because it goes on the shorter nipple. Then its clip, then the "Res" hose. "Res" clip last.
