Title: The Ultimate Motor Oil?
Post by: GaryIF on April 24, 2004, 08:05:35 PM
I just completed my spring maintenance (plugs, oil, filter, air filter, etc.) and treated my 2001 to Redline synthetic.  I'll let ya'll know how it works out.  All the literature on this brand indicates that it's up there with the best for all applications, including and explicitly motorcycles.

Stay tuned.

I use tech-2000 from wall mart $0.87 a quart....x3+ filter...$6.00 for an oil change....tollerable for me
Title: Cheaper...

Cheaper than that... Accel from walmart. 76 cents a quart for SF rated oil... I am cheaper than Ken.... but this is good oil. Its loaded with additives. And my manual says SE oil.
Cool.

My WalMart quit carrying the Tech2000 20-50.  Now they just have 10w50 with Energy Conserving II :nono:.  So I'm using the Accel oil now.  It's kinda hard to see on the dipstick.  And it only comes in single quarts.

I still get the HiFlo filter from the bike shop, tho'.  Haven't found anything cheaper ($4), and hey, it comes with two gaskets!

Title: Castrol

I use Castrol 10-40 GTX,put 40,000 miles on my first GSs and never adjusted the valves. When I sold the bike it ran well and and burned no oil.At 2500 miles between oil changes the oil was not even dark.Works for me! By the way, do you suppose there is a reason the manual says use 10w-40. PS.The W stands for winter.

castrol gtx as in "car" motor oil or motorcycle oil????...because i couldn't find it for motorcycle engines

i'm thinking it's a bad idea to use car motor oil in motorcycle engines

probably not too bad... the only real difference i can see is the wet clutch mayb react funny to car oil, whereas motorcycle oil probably is formulated differently not to mess with the clutch.  but what do i know?

Castrol GP 10W40(mineral) or 20W50. Just switched to Castrol GPS 10W40 (semi-synthetic). Both oils are good and stay good for a lot of km's. I usually change around 5000-6000 km's (4000 mi)

I have Redline in my GS as well. I have been using it in my TLR for several years and liked the results with it, being shifting mainly.
